Sure. Beyond the Realms of the Death was just Schoolastic books compared to You Better Your Bet lmao

Exhibit A.

You better you better you bet, ooh
You better you better you bet, ooh
You better you better you bet, ooh
You better you better you bet, ooh
I call you on the telephone
My voice too rough with cigarettes
I sometimes feel I should just go home
But I'm dealing with a memory that never forgets
I love to hear you say my name
Especially when you say yes
I got your body right now on my mind
But I drunk myself blind to the sound of old T-Rex
Mmm
To the sound of old T-Rex
Oh, and who's next?
When I say, "I love you, " you say, you better
You better you better you bet
When I say, "I need you, " you say, you better
You better you better you bet
You better bet your life
Or love will cut you like a knife
I want those feeble-minded axes overthrown
I'm not into your passport picture
I just like your nose
You welcome me with open arms and open legs
I know only fools have needs
But this one never begs
I don't really mind how much you love me
Ooh, a little is alright
When you say, "Come over and spend the night
Tonight, " tonight
When I say, "I love you, " you say, you better
You better you better you bet
When I say, "I need you, " you say, you better
You better you better you bet
You better bet your life
Or love will cut you, cut you like a knife
I lay on the bed with you
We could make some book of records
Your dog keeps licking my nose
And chewing up all those letters
Saying you better
You better bet your life
You better love me all the time now
You better shove me back into line now
You better love me all the time now
You better shove me back into line now
I showed up late one night
With a neon light for a visa
But knowing I am so eager to fight
Can't make letting me in any easier
I know I've been wearing crazy clothes
And I look pretty crappy sometimes
But my body feels so good
And I still sing a razor line every time
And when it comes to all-night living
I know what I'm giving
I've got it all down to a tee
And it's free
When I say, "I love you, " you say, you better
You better you better you bet
When I say, "I need you, " you say, you better
You better you better you bet

Exhibit B.
He's had enough
He couldn't take anymore
He found a place in his mind
And slammed the door
No matter how they tried
They couldn't understand
They washed and dressed him
Fed him by hand
Yeah! I've left the world behind
I'm safe here in my mind
I'm free to speak with my own kind
This is my life, this is my life
I'll decide not you
Withdrawn he sat there
Staring into space
No sign of life
Would flicker on his face
Until one day he smiled
It seemed as though with pride
The wind kissed him goodbye
And then he died
Yeah I've left the world behind
I'm safe here in my mind
I'm free to speak with my own kind
This is my life, this is my life
I'll decide not you
Keep the world with all its sin
It's not fit for livin' in
Yeah I will start again
It can take forever, and ever whatever, whenever, but I'll still win
How many like him
Are they still
Who to us all
Seem to have lost the will
They lie in thousands
Lank and lost
Is knowledge worth this bitter cost
Yeah I've left the world behind
I'm safe here in my mind
I'm free to speak with my own kind
This is my life, this is my life
I'll decide not you
Keep the world with all its sin
It's not fit for living in
Beyond the realms of death

"I'm not into your passport picture, I just like your nose" or " I lay on the bed with you, we could make some book of records. Your dog keeps licking my nose and chewing up all those letters". These are legitimate lyrics!

I'm sorry that Glenn Tipton or KK Downing couldn't match the sage poetry of Pete Townsend. I retract lmao

Since Quadrophenia is one of the most brilliant albums of all time, it was easy for me to vote. If they released nothing else, they would still get my vote.

@Clockworkmike I think the lyrics post backed up my "accessibility" argument for better or worse. What listeners may find as more relatable to their lives. I'm honestly getting more out of the annoying push/pull of a relationship vs some poor dude who went catatonic.

But, I will submit there is a need to explore all subject matter In fact, Tommy was pretty much about a similar mental condition if I understand it right

Priest all the way for me.
Funny memory... I begged my older brother to let me borrow his portable cassette player, a Sony Walkman knockoff (but was a good brand).
Walkman's of any kind were kind of a luxury item since being able to listen to anything you wanted at a given moment in such a portable way was still a novelty.
I took it to school and remember listening to Screaming for Vengeance (fall of 1983) on a recess break when I was 12 years old.
A much older kid was curious what I was listening to, so he looked at the cassette... then backed away in shock... I sensed he thought I was way too young to be listening to this.

Lol granted, id say more folks could relate to Exhibit A better than B. But B just sounds cooler and darker lol and yeah, Tommy is the same theory although worse in conditions: remember Cousin Kevin and Uncle Ernie? Ugh....just....bad lol

Yeah, this one is tough.

I don't like to just look at it like, "Who rocked harder?" To me, that is too subjective (well, ALL of this is subjective!) and brings the question down to a power chord chugging/guitar solo circus.

I'm trying to look at it unemotionally and to consider which band was most influential in the period in question. I see arguments on both sides, and I don't really have a suitable answer here.

@smitty_p smitty I guess the poll question *could have said "harder" rather than "Who rocked it better." -

It's apparent the more "gainy/chuggy" a sound is, combined with how dark the poetic themes are is for some also a measure of quality, or at the very least governs how likely a piece may touch them or stir their emotions.

I feel that a little bit, the aggressive nature of those tones and style, but I think relying on that musical palette makes the expression of "dark 'n threatening" more than a little easier.

It seems we have a proxy war here of rock vs metal too if we're looking at the bands themselves. By that? The overwhelming consensus due to the majority of members here, is that metal pretty much doesn't stand a chance, let's be honest lol and that is totally fine

I'm sensing another battle brewing down the line, maybe 2 separate ones with specific criteria

For me it isn't strictly lyrics at all. It's music it's a song. I find much of tne Who stuff boring, it wasn't My Generation so to speak. So Priest all the way music wise.
Different strokes different tastes

I would agree too. Those two songs in particular were total opposites: one is happy and upbeat, kind of silly. The other is brooding and emotional. The Who clearly won this round and that is fine, but I never looked at them as a strong rock band to begin with, rather a pop band masquerading as a rock band. Some of their music had some deeper emotion and sophistication, like Won't Get Filled Again,Baba O'Reilly, Love Reign O'er Me, Young Man's Blues etc. But a lot of it was just schlocky pop in my opinion. Out of the 16 bands? They seem to be the most poppy on this list overall.

But, majority rules and if the consensus says it's rock, then I guess it is lol

I prefer listening to the combination of power chord chugging or better yet (chord comping) along with tasty guitar licks and great lyrics.
The Who delivered.

I can’t agree on this choice and I will always reside on the side of metal and guitar focused songs.

The Who has some great tunes and Moon was off the chart just not my jam.
I would much rather listen to Uriah Heep.

Priest are the band that further laid groundwork for metal and duel lead guitars.
Halford is one of best vocalist among handful of greats. Just sayin.
