Guitar tones you are "SUPPOSED" to like.... but don't

I know there are bands that were hugely influential and thereis no denying it. I get it.
But I don't have to love their guitar tones.

I hate the sorta out of phase nasally tone. None of it really ever did anything for me. Influencial though they were.

ACDC
That one will be controversial. Back in Black is ok but tbe earlier stuff? Hard rockin tunes with a barely distorted break up that fades to clean?
Yawn.

First album KISS
Lameass tones. Very little distortion for a hard core rock band with huge stage show, makeup, explosions etc. Just lame tonally, could be a sign of the times except Sabbath had heavy sounds a few years before this, as an esample. Alive is where it started to really cook.


Can't think of more off hamd. For me.
 
Agree on Brian May, and anything Clapton has ever done with a Stratocaster (strangely though, put a Gibson in the guy's hands and its like the angels singing). And got to agree partly on Randy - the tones on 'Blizzard' are weak and nasally but they got some great tones on'Diary'

As for other ones I should like but don't, Dimebag would have to top the list. His tone was like a bag of bees.
And I never could get along with the tones on Skynyrd albums, despite really liking the music. They just feel too stiff.

My definition of "good tone" would probably start with Duane Allman and Dickie Betts. I can't think of any Allmans Brothers songs that have bad tone. And because they were running pretty much without pedals most of the time, it's a good starting point of how a Gibson Les Paul and Marshall amp should sound.

How about Jeff Beck? I can't even listen to his later stuff, the guy just would not leave the wang bar alone and it makes it really tedious for me.
 
When I hear Chorus delay reverb on guitar not happy most hide behind it same with distortion stomp box
was it I was to poor when starting out all the Blues masters I watched just amp and guitar they used talent
one of the best was Ronnie Montrose live 1959 Les Paul 100 watt Marshall he did use delay on a few songs but it was clean

So who do you like?
Clapton on Gibson.
Duane Allman and Dickie Betts. The only guitar tones that are Jethro Approved.
 
I dislike almost anytime a Stratocaster with all single coils is used with heavy distortion. I like an HSS Strat better for that.

As an example, some of the early Motorhead stuff where a distorted Strat was used doesn't sound very good to me.

Effects don't bother me. I actually take an interest in hearing how a guitar player may sculpt his sound with effects. Sometimes they can be out of place and be overused, though. For me, it depends on context.
 
I've kinda always disliked "Metal" tones and saturated distortion - fuzzy "easy harmonics" kinda tones like later EVH distortion and Satriani kinda "High Gain" tones. Especially when they then add a delay and/or a chorus on it. Eww.

I actually like essentially what 'thro does not like, I'd say. Lol.
