Ya ever been really reluctant to eat in a place that looks sketchy on the outside. Yet ended up completely blowing you away? I have a few times and it happened again today. I was worried about the neighborhood to the point that I was really worried about our truck. The place had plywood covering several windows. But it ended up being the best Szechuan food I’ve ever had. And Peking duck to die for.

Anyway if you got an example, please share.

Yep! Best examples? BBQ joints. I learned an extremely valuable lesson years ago: walk into a place that's nice, glitzy and posh? And the food is dog $hit 9/10 times. But you pull up to some hole in the wall that looks like it's one health code violation away from closure, in some rundown building? And it's the best damn BBQ known to mankind. It never fails. It's gotten to where I actually SEEK out places like that lol

Italian joints are another good example: glitzy? Probably crap. Building and sign out front looks like it hasn't been updated in 40 years? Authentic as it gets

We had a place we liked. Just a few blocks from an apartment we were renting. Didn’t look like much from the outside and frankly was pretty “rustic” on the inside. The chef/owner was amazing. Never had a bad meal there. Unfortunately. He went out business.

Couple times a year he’d do a wine dinner. Five course and there would be a wine paired up with each course. And it was not Texas Roadhouse Steak. Everything served was up scale. Not too different from a French Restaurant we frequented before we moved.

There used to be an Italian place near us (well 30 miles or so ) but it was an old building with a 70's time capsule decor that the food was just was out of this world. But nobody was ever in there, and Olive Garden was full. It was a sad day when they closed it up.

Our fave Mexican spot used to be a really low-rent burger joint, and survived little changed. Bentwood booths, big posters advertising breakfast and taco specials over all the windows. Zero atmosphere, big flavor. Best carnitas tacos in life.
