Despite all the “horse-tradin’” and GAS episodes and everything else that comes with the musician hobby/lifestyle/etc., I’ve been fortunate to find (and keep) twospectacular instruments that have been my “#1” guitar.

From 1993 to 2008, it was my (namesake) 1992 Fender US Vintage ‘62 Stratocaster.

It was amazing when I bought it…and with the mechanical, electronic and cosmetic customizations and modifications I’ve done to it, I truly have “My Stratocaster”, and I really can’t see it being supplanted from that lofty perch.

**For specific details of all the customizations and modifications I’ve done, see this:

But c.2008, it was eventually usurped from the #1 position by a lowly hecho-en-Ensenada 1995 Fender Special Tele that I bought used in 2003.

I liked the hard edges of the uncontoured slab body, and the weird-but-comfy neck with the unrolled edges…by the time I engineered or customized out the things I didn’t like about it, it became the guitar I reached for first, whether rehearsing, jamming, recording or performing, whether playing slide or straight or alternate tuning or plain ol’ 440/standard or blues or outlaw country or rock and roll…it’s the one I’d grab if the house is on fire…it relegated the guitar I had proclaimed my #1 for fifteen years to the secondary spot.

**For specific details of all the customizations and modifications I’ve done, see this:

But here’s the real question:

What makes your #1 instrument (guitar, bass, whatever) “Your #1”?

For me, it came down to this:

-Which guitar am I thinking about or comparing other guitars to?

-Which guitar am I wishing I was performing/recording/whatever with instead of the one I currently have in my lap or strapped across my shoulder?

-Which guitar do I grab without thinking, “This one *might* work ok for what I’m doing today…” vs, “This one always does what I need it to do…”

For me, it is my pinstriped Telecaster (“Big Tex”), or secondarily, my Fiesta Red Stratocaster…

Those two guitars always deliver…

I have (and I love) several other guitars, from cheap to high-end and all of them are vastly different in pickups, neck profiles, body wood, construction, etc…I’m partial to Fenders, but I’m not very brand-loyal and definitely not sycophantic in that preference.

But when I’m playing my (amazing) 1980 G&L F-100 or (cheap and funky) Dean VX or (kick-butt) 2007 Fender ‘72-reissue Telecaster Deluxe or whichever other guitar I’m playing at the moment, I’m thinking:

This might sound better if I were playing Big Tex or Fiesta Red…”

…and more often than not, it’s Big Tex—which is why it is my 1A and Fiesta Red is my 1B.

Yeah, I like the humbuckers in my G&L and Telecaster Deluxe and Dean VX, but the P-90s and single coils of those two main guitars can do dang-near everything I want to do, sonically…and they look cool…and the playability is as good as I could ever ask out of any guitar…and…

You get the point.

Alas, I do not have a "#1". Don't get me wrong; I very much love and enjoy all the guitars I have, but I can't say any one of them is my favorite.

When learning a song, I tend to "hear" in my head the guitar that I think would work best for a song. Sometimes, I may change that guitar after awhile, but that's my general approach.

I don't really have a guitar that I just instinctively reach for.

Sounds kinda sad, huh?

What's more, if I feel like I've been prioritizing one guitar for just general playing a lot, I'll stop playing it for awhile. I don't want to get stuck in a rut, so I force myself to switch things up from time to time.

Well since i only have 1 guitar my #1 is a modded by me Epiphone Jarod James Nichols Gold Glory Les Paul Custom. I love this thing.only thing stock is the wood but its just personal things done i like.ive had tons of guitars when younger.Alot i wish id kept.I had like 4 guitars when i got this thing a couple years ago and the others just became redundant.I had nothing that was collector value so i donated them to the Selkirk School music program.School is a block away from where i live. Its a poor area so the kids were thrilled. Warmed my heart to to see there eyes.2 i donated to the local American Legion for there anual fund raising auction. Here she is,fresh pick this morning.Screenshot_20250117_053157_Gallery.jpg

What makes your #1 instrument (guitar, bass, whatever) “Your #1”?

1st "real" guitar, my 17 Gibson Les Paul Tribute - satin honey burst.
I'd have to say familiarity makes it my #1, and there's nothing I don't like about it.

I know it's a bottom shelf Gibson and the least expensive one I have.
Mostly stock except for the zebra '61 Burst Buckers & Studio PCB (p/p splits).

I like all my guitars, and I do play them all, but the Tribute is the one I compare the others to.

#1 is my T-Style Custom, the builder did everything i asked for.

The feel of the neck is so comfortable and fast, i haven't experienced a neck this nice, on any guitar i own , or have played to this day.
It will cover any music i play and then some.

The tones from the humbuckers. My other guitars are great players, but there is that edge that my custom just delivers. Its the most comfortable playing guitar, that just keeps drawing me in. I would never want to lose this guitar ever. I just can't say enough about it.

Warmoth parts-caster I built 6 months ago, specifically for recording.

It's got everything you need and nothing you don't.

This is probably my number 1. A faded V

It feels like home.

There is an organic feel to this guitar.

Aesthetically, I think it's beautiful.

Sonically it is amazing, it records well, and makes exactly the tones I have always wanted.

This is the guitar I prefer to play when I want to grab a guitar. I grab it more often than all the others.

For many years my #1 was my 1991 3 knob sg. It has been nudged back to my #2. My new #1 is a Gretsch G100CE archtop with a floating pickup. I put some Thomastik Infield flat wounds on it. I mostly play it acoustically but amplified with a touch of dirt it is awesome. It tends to feed back so I go through a LR Baggs Venue DI with a notch filter and a phase switch. I also use an HPF pedal which also helps with the feedback. When you get everything working it growls something fierce.

#1 has gotta be this sucker. Why? In part because it's got the most perfect neck (for me) that I have ever had in my hand. Partly because it's just about the perfect weight for a Les Paul (IMO) at about 9.5, so it has "that" sound. And part because I made it my own - not much is original in the way of hardware, pickups, electronics...all replaced to make it work and sound better for me (PuPs are Super Distortion in the bridge and Super 2 in the neck).

I love that guitar every time I see it!

I sold one of my favorite guitars. My 2000 LP special. But since I have the LP Classic I didn’t need the special and I have a 1990 Ebony studio.
I actually sold the special to buy the Marshall studio classic jcm800.

To be honest, I can’t crank studio classic and it doesn’t get played that much.
I would almost trade it for a Charvel.
My recent Strat obsession is caused by my Harley Benton, it’s not numero uno but it is my go to for now. Stays by the computer, no case. Most of the others have cases.
