We did learn something when we discovered we had bats in the attic. Bats are a protected animal in the States. It's illegal to kill them on purpose.... as in, can't trap them like you would a mouse. Bat guy said after inspection, probably only a couple dozen.... so more than we'd like and not as bad as he's seen. Friend of mine with a 100 year old house had bats.... like multiple dozens. With our house totally surrounded by trees, frankly we were surprised it took them 20 years to get in. Good thing is. Never got out of the attic into our living space.

It's quite a procedure to eradicate bats from inside a house. 1st order of business is to inspect whole house and seal up all points of entry. And we're talking 3/8" gaps. Then install a single one way "trap" that allows them to get out to go search for food, but won't let them back in. Takes a couple weeks to be sure they are all out. Then they pull the trap and seal up that gap. All of that = dollars.
