I feel like it's NAD, the beast is back!

I built this amp in late 2013 if memory serves me right. I'm not an amp guy and barely understand how an amp works. I built this amp to prove a point and out a hack. I couldn't have done it without a lot of help from a couple of guys, Terry (@T-Rex) mostly. Without him stepping up to help me out I don't think I could have ever pulled it off, I didn't ask him, I didn't really even know him at the time, but right from the start he was there and just took charge. Though I've tried, I could never thank him enough, He didn't have to do that and I'll never forget his generosity.

What is it? Well, it's an 18watt Cameron/Jose High Gain "Plexi". I dubbed it the "Lil' Devil" after the Cult song, the first song I learned to play on electric guitar back around '89. As far as I know it's one of a kind. It used to be an EL84 amp, but I had Terry change out the power section (several years ago) and now it runs (2) 6V6 power tubes. It has (3) 12ax7 pres. Controls on the front are Presence, Bass, Mids, Treb, MV, Gain 1 and Gain 2, it has a 3-way switch for Cameron/off/Freidman HG clipping and a resonance knob on the back.

I played it exclusively up until sometime in 2022 when "I thought" I was just getting bored with it and bought an SC20 and basically just kicked this one to the curb. My SC20 was sounding so much better with a Mr Scary hot mod in it and a boost up front. It had turned really bright and fizzy and didn't seem to have the gain it used to. I really thought something was wrong with it, like something failed or fried, it's full of NOS resisters and caps so that's what I was thinking. I was going thru some bad times at the time and was really down and I just didn't know what to do with it, was frustrated and really didn't want to mess with it with all that was on my mind.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I decided to give it another try. I removed it from the headbox so I could roll some tubes, thinking maybe I had a bad preamp tube or something, before I started prodding around in it. I never imagined a bad power tube, I thought if a power tube went it would take the fuse, but I noticed right off that in standby one of the power tubes was glowing brighter than the other one and when I took it out of standby that tube lit up with a blue glow. AaaaHA!!!

So I swapped out the power tubes for the backup set I had (JJ 6V6S) and it was sounding better, but something still wasn't right. I started rolling preamp tubes one at a time and found that my V1 tube was also bad. Now we're talking, she's back!!! :fingersx:

So since then I've been rolling tubes in the preamp and I ordered a set of old, but good tested Raytheon black glass 6V6s that came yesterday. I never really realized it before, but this amp is really sensitive to tube choice. Every position is finicky, I had a stash of old used and NOS preamp tubes that I've collected over the years and none of them sound good in it. I recently ordered a stash of 3 NOS Vintage German RFT tubes. I have one of those in V1, I tried all 3 of them in it, that didn't sound very good, but just one in V1 is great. I just have Marshall Gold labels in V2 and V3 for now, but they sound good.

I can't tell you how awesome this amp sounds, anything I think to try it's in there. Even the 112 cab that I had all but given up on sounds killer with a Creamback 65 in it, but that's another story. I'm blown away by it "again", but it's never sounded as good as it does right now. I got so wound up excited playing it today that I sent myself into a full blown anxiety attack, no joke! (I have service connected chronic anxiety disorder so yeah...even good things bring it on)

I wish one of you that has a way to record lived close enough to me that I could bring it over to get a recording. I really wish I could get it in @Headache 's hands!

Anyway, I am so unworthy, this thing is miles above my pay grade! It's an absolutely badass amp and right now sounds better than it ever has, I'm so stoked I had to post about it!

That's a sweet looking little rig. :yesway:
Glad to hear it's working again, and from what you describe, apparently better than ever.
Yes it is! I know now that I never had the right preamp tubes in it, but I didn't realize how much they mattered in this amp. I just went with thru the different combination Marty suggested with the tubes he sent me and n settled on the best combination out of those. I never questioned if they were any good, I was so naive back then. And I have no idea if the power tubes were ever 100%, Terry put them in there and I'm sure they were good then. I think it was a very gradual decline.

What I do know is that my SC20 is probably going to be for sale. Everything I wanted it for I get here, and better. I had Sourmash custom build this cab for me to fit my chassis. I want to have him build me another identical cab in black with white piping to match my 212 cab. Or I might also sell the MX cab and have him build me a 212 cab to match. My focus has completely shifted to this amp now and I'm not liking the white cabs anymore. I've always had a weird relationship with this amp because of how it came to be and how stressful the whole situation was, but I think it's been long enough now and I just don't care anymore...finally! I know what I have is special and I'm just going to go with it.

I need to get you guys some sound clips so I can put my money where my mouth is...I'm going to work on that.

That's a really cool deal man! Finding new love for an old love is just plain awesome !

You rig reminds me of Randy Rhoads" white Marshall rig, which I think it the coolest looking rig ever!

You can record things with just a phone and still get some quality captured tones. Just move your phone around and figure out where it sounds best.

If you want to get it recorded a step better, you really only need a decent mic and an interface.

I could recommend some great stuff for super cheap if you're interested. It actually really easy to do, even a knuckle dragger like me can do it.
Heck, Vito, @LiveeviL2000 talked me into getting my interface.

This thing gets amazing reviews and it's only $29!
Amazon Basics - Wired Dynamic Vocal Microphone, Cardioid, XLR, Black/Silver https://a.co/d/fImGTf9

This is the best price for a new (refurb) I could find for this specific model that I use. (Only because I know it works with my phone)

Or you can use something like the Beringer UPhoria interface for super cheap into a laptop?

Just as some ideas for something really simple.

Also this is a complete kit for $179

Trial and error with mic placement a few times, and you could record anything with it. I have recorded entire songs with my focusrite into my phone (minus drums which I bought off YouTube)

But you are welcome to bring that beauty by my house anytime and we can record it! Ha that would be fun!

Nobody is unworthy of quality gear.... One time I scrimped and saved and sold a few things to be able to buy a 6505+ head.... That thing melted faces! I felt I wasn't good enough to own it, and felt guilty for spending that kind of money on something for myself. It bugged me so bad that I sold it.
I still kick myself for doing that.... That amp was amazing.

Also, I do like the gold face a little bit better.

I have this, I've had it for years, I have a mic and monitors and everything. Only thing is, I don't know what to do with it. I had a friend try to help walk me thru it when I first bought it back when I first built this amp, but I didn't get it. It was overwhelming to me at the time. I might have to try again.

I went through all of the hard to learn
“ how to record basics “ many years ago but I keep learning about recording. Fortunately the internet is good for tutorials. You have a good start and the people here like Steve know quite a lot about recording. Windows PC , right ?

Depending on what outputs you have on the back is how you'd use it.
If it has a USB C output then you could record right to your phone and maybe that would work if it has a USB A as well.

I think your unit has the house shaped USB and so I don't really know how you'd use that except to a mixing board and then into a PC or something.

The USB can go directly to the PC.
Reaper is a really good DAW and does not take up a lot of space.

I looked it up, special gold edition. They all look similar in layout and probably function about the same.

I looked up a random video, this has a lot of details including registering but the drivers are all you need.

I found the interface and cables, but I haven't located the mic or mic stand yet and I haven't found the disc. I know all that stuff is here, but it's still packed in boxes. I'm trying to figure out why I didn't keep everything together, but I've moved 3 or 4 times since I last tried to use it so I'm not surprised really.
