Doom ?

I think I've been just naturally playing Doom/stoner style for a long time, but I just didn't realize it. I'm experimenting right now and working on setting up a rig just for it, mainly trying to decide which guitar to keep set up for down tuning, a good fuzz and which of my amps is best to use for it.

What amps do you have to choose from?

I favor a good, cleanish, amp for a fuzz base. Something either clean and full, or just on the edge of breakup. My Laney really does have a clean channel that sounds huge, and hardly breaks up at mind bending volume levels…it takes fuzz like a champ.
If you’re looking for lounging levels, I’ve had good luck from lots of alternatives…my 18watt is my go to for this.

I have a Marshall SC20, a GR Harvard clone built for me by T-Rex and I have a Jose/Cameron High gain Plexi style I built about 10 or so years ago that I just got back up and running today. It started sounding thin and lacking gain about a year or 2 ago (time flies and I don't remember exactly) and I just set it aside when I bought my SC until today when I set out to find out why it turned to pooh. I discovered it had a dying power tube and a bad preamp tube in V1. I put a set of JJ 6V6S power tubes in it and an NOS RFT in V1 and WOW, the damn thing came back to life in all it's glory! I'm very happy about that, I forgot how awesome it is.

It's a one of a kind amp and my proudest moment. It was a rebuild after I got ripped off on it and it was a whole big thing at the time. It all happened on the Marshal forum but it spread to other forums as it was happening. I outed a hack and proved myself all at the same time. I couldn't have done it without @T-Rex stepping up to help me out.

Here's the whole group...

I guess I’d lean toward the SC20, or the GR Harvard clone. I’d set up with guitar volume set full up, and go for a bit of breakup on the amp…like AC/DC “Jailbreak” when strumming at your hardest…but should clean up a bit with softer picking or fingers. When you roll the guitar volume back to 5, you want it to sound pretty clean with the pick. Then put a fuzz in front of that, set the fuzz volume to hit the preamp fairly hard, dial the guitar tone back to taste, and use the guitar volume to vary the overall gain as desired.
Pickups will affect this setup…hotter p-ups will need less gain etc.

I sometimes use a boost in front of the fuzz, for extra flavor. My go to pedals for boost are a treble booster, or a Way-Huge Red Llama(that I put together years ago…set to mid volume, and low gain -like 9:00 to 10:30 on the gain on mine).

Yeah, the Harvard loves fuzz, or any pedal for that matter. I have a BYOC NYC Big Muff clone I built several years ago that's awesome, and I just picked up this MXR Fuzz a few weeks ago that I'm really digging.

The SC on the low input is also a great pedal platform so it'll be in competition with the Harvard. Getting my HG back up and running is a game changer and kind of throws a wrench in the way I've been thinking about all this, it gives me all I need for old school metal and hard rock tones and frees up my SC for doing other things. I have so many options now I don't know what to do. lol!

Good to know about the SC. I think the Electroharmonix Lizard King is in the cross hair.

@SG John is well versed in this genre.
I just happen to be friends with the guys in those bands along with Roadsaw, Kilslug, Milligram, and a few others. What was the local sound for heavy bands has turned into a new genre, and it's nice to see that many of the influential bands are from Boston. The singer for Kind and Roadsaw also just happens to be the drummer for Sasquatch. It is a small incestuous world.

As for down tuning for stoner stuff, don't bother. I know that most of the bands play in standard or drop D tuning. It's all about the amp and pedal settings. Maybe some of the non New England bands down tune, but I thought that was more of a gnu-metal thing.
