Do you think pop music got more focused in the mid-late 70's?

This thread clearly demonstrates one thing, that everything about art, culture and the creative process is subjective. My dad is a 94-year-old lifelong painter who came out of the 1950s abstract impressionist movement. Whenever somebody looks at a piece of art and says, “I’ll bet I could do something like that,” my dad will smile and respond, “then maybe you should.”

I can't be sure? That's laughable.

It is for me. And that's all that matters.

Chic, whether on their own or with Will Smith, will be played long after Iron Maiden is forgotten.

I like a good song. Chic has several. Maiden has none. Zero. Zip. Nada.

I'll listen to Metallica all day. Maiden...not a chance in hell.

I honestly don't get how Iron Maiden made it into a pop music thread.

I won't listen to Metallica at any time, I prefer Bands on the lighter side of things.

To a large extent it is, but people's taste's are all over the place. Most of the true Metal heads are more focused on music made in this century you will find, but any Metal is good Metal.

Now Gary, you know I am not a metal guy, please have respect for your Elder..:D

For sure subjective. It’s what’s so cool about music. What does it for me doesn’t do anything for you. And it’s okay. I like Sound of Silence. By both Simon and Garfunkel and the group Disturbed. Same song done different ways. Both awesome.

We have some guys here that do some incredible music. Instruments are awesome. Then they start singing…. Or growling…. Or screaming…… whatever you want to call it. I wouldn’t drop a dime on purchasing. But others here are falling all over themselves praising their songs. I’ve never purchased a Beatles, Stones or Zeppelin album. They didn’t do it for me. But I can acknowledge what they did for our genre of music we love.

A wise man once said…. “It’s a good thing we’re all different, otherwise we’d all be chasing the same girl.”

Perfect example of different strokes for different folks. I too enjoy the “lighter side”…… and yet I like some of what Metallica has done. Currently I have their Load CD in the car player and their S&M Cd in the car all ready to go. Both are incredible CDs.

Now what I call a bit on the heavier side of things. The band i like the Tragically Hip. Many of you won't know them I am sure of that, they have some great music , but like it has been said here, all depends on the person..

Yep. Burt had one of the best Rock voices. Disco was a fashion - I do not like fashion.

Exactly. Subjective. No right and wrong when it comes to art.

My definition of Pop (popular) is a song, when released is liked by a lot of people, gets played on the radio, and sells media. Then 2 to 3 year later, it’s never on the radio and sales are 0. Does not matter the genre.
