Do you think pop music got more focused in the mid-late 70's?

You know. Theres the conspiracy theory that neither Jim or Elvis died. They hung out together somewhere in France. ;)
Apparently Jim went to Morocco. He had apparently told Pam (his girlfriend) that he'd love to settle down there after a buying trip for Pam's clothing boutique, Themis.

Both Born to be Wild and Magic Carpet Ride were bad bad bad when they’d come on the radio while us idiot males were cruising our little rural community. Usually involved foot going to floor on the loud pedal.
I failed to mention, in 1977 I got my first car. It was a 1970 with AM RAdio only! Luckily, Am was still decent back then at least for awhile.

Depending on what cultural upbringing you had, makes huge difference.
Pop..popular ..good ..mainstream consumption...
I couldn't imagine boxing myself in to any genre...music..is music... no matter how you label & what ya like is what ya like.,..

I think there was actually a wider focus if you consider "pop" in the most general terms. The 70s were a gateway era in music, with an expanding presence for FM over AM radio, and the emergence of glam, punk, new wave, techno, disco, fusion, outlaw country and a whole lot of other genres in no particular order. In a way, it mirrored other trends in pop culture, including film. Also, technology was starting to explode, from recording to new mediums like video. In other words, there was a lot to choose from, and record labels were signing like there was no tomorrow.

But if you're looking at a more narrow lens of pop, there was definitely a trend toward listenability, i.e. more noise reduction, compression, sing-along in the car, etc.

This is a interesting conversation.
I think pop music evolved just like rock music did. Rock however went in different directions.

The Beatles and stones were trying to emulate R&B. And they were sucessful.
Pop music became focused but for more money to the record company
No one mentioned Free.
All Right Now rocked but by many it's still pop.

I have another question.
What bands are punk ?
I think the Kinks were the original punks well before punk was even a genre

I suspect most of us tend to like the music we grew up on the most. 60s did nothing for me, I was a teenager in the 70s and radio played good rock as well as schlock and disco. I hate what is considered pop music, especially back then. Just schlocky syrupy poo.
I like what I like and popularity means absolutely nothing to me.

It's always an interesting question because it could be when people started calling it punk, or when the music itself started having that attitude. Lux and Ivy of the Cramps used to have the most amazing collection of 45s by all these outrageous and obscure 50s roots rock artists. The U.S. garage rock movement of the early 60s was hugely influential with bands like the Sonics, Barbarians, and Standells. The Stooges started gigging in 1967, etc, etc...

Perhaps mainstream radio. But music fans will still be playing Maiden.
Maiden fans will be dead. I'm a music fan, and I never listen to Iron Maiden. Never heard anything I'd listen to twice intentionally .
Chic will be alive on radio and in film and TV. And as samples.

I'm a music fan too and I never listen to Chic or disco. No one can be sure what will stand the test of time for the majority of people and what will live on radio. I'm sure no one ever did a Maiden sample, as an example. :cautious:
What I'm saying is you can't be sure your opinion is the correct one.

What I'm saying is you can't be sure your opinion is the correct one.

I can't be sure? That's laughable.

It is for me. And that's all that matters.

Chic, whether on their own or with Will Smith, will be played long after Iron Maiden is forgotten.

I like a good song. Chic has several. Maiden has none. Zero. Zip. Nada.

I'll listen to Metallica all day. Maiden...not a chance in hell.

I honestly don't get how Iron Maiden made it into a pop music thread.

So it's laughable because you know your opinion is correct?
Again It's just your opinion.
Not mine or many others.
That's all that matters here for me.

Didn't know this was a metal head forum.

Now here's something to chew on:

Enter Sandman is Pop just like Smoke On The Water is. And I like both of them. I also like Elvis Costello and Paul Simon.

I get a kick out of GWAR. WASP? Not so much.

Rob Zombie writes pop songs. Worked with him on the Rollerball remake. Great normal guy with great pop sensibilities. Smart as a whip too. He gets the importance of the now and living in it. And he knows that in 40 years no one will remember him. LoL

Yeah, opinions and taste. I wouldn't listen to a Chic song, not one of them, if my life depended on it.
I had a girlfriend that listened to that crap in the late '70s and every time she put it on I had to leave the room.

Different strokes, man, and I wonder how many arenas Chic is selling out every year while Maiden plays to a million or so people this year alone.

Pop, rock, depends on the listener. Didn't know it was a metal head forum either. Doesn't mean I can't be a Maiden fan and hate disco pop crap.
I like Burton Cummings, Amanda Marshall, all sorts. Disco I do not.
