Do You Need a digital amp?

I am so happy that I am old.
I can get away with looking back at those who ask things like this of me, with an expression halfway between "when are ya gonna deliver the punch line?" and "is that Swahili that you're speaking? " ...!

If it doesn't emit something similar to the aroma of an old fender amplifier warming up (that I only recently learned is caused by the heating of the lacquer used in the transformers back in the middle of the last century) I don't think that I do...

need it.

I’m a digital kinda guy. I’ve used a lot of different computer based amp models with various levels of success, managed to get a nice sounding clean-just-about-to-breakup from Guitar Rig and the models in Logic. I get a similar tone from a Boss Katana. Now that I don’t make music to order anymore, it’s probably the only guitar tone I really need.

Due to the small house and small room, I have no choice but to use modelers.
I do occasionaly use tube amp but not on a regular basis.
Oh...modeler...
well then!

Having a pristine BF Super Reverb used as a foot stool by a sound guy in a well respected venue with a stage electrical system installed by an elementary school dropout convinced me that good equipment has no place hanging out in joints like that.

So I created a thing that let me mimic what I wanted from whatever I chose, that could suffer the abuse (and cost less than $500). Besides, in many places the "audience" is engaged in the intricacies of western hemisphere mating rituals and, other than repetitive requests for Mustang Sally (by an act they* had paid a steep cover to attend a performance of original material from), neither knew or cared what the subtle nuance of tonality might contribute...

So why bother with the good stuff when economy class will more than suffice?

*They being the 'those who paid the cover' and rarely were the same 'those making stupid requests.' That would fall to the one's accompanying those who opened wallet or purse. I'm pretty sure that had I asked the requesting party to write the request out, Mustang Sally would've been misspelled.

Anyway, in 03, when I put this thing together, the technology was in relative infancy.

What I saw in the OP was not that...

An individualistic question for sure.
Personally, I do need digital amplification for home recording (not that I do much, but I like having the option) and to get great sounds at lower volumes.
To that end, I have a Yamaha THR10C and a Fender Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb, both of which can go direct to computer.
I also maintain my 5F11 tweed Vibrolux for micked recording and playing. I will always love that amp!

For me, there is a place/need for both tube and digital amplification. I expect that, although many may not admit it, that's probably true for a majority of us non- & semi-professionals.

A modeler is a digital amp to me not physically like the Katana. Clear as mud the Nembrini Audio JMP plugin is a little expensive for a amp plugin but it's a little different.

The one amp I like right know even though it's not a full on tube and gets verbal abuse on the web is the EVH Iconic combo.

No, I need a digital amp not! I’ve had several and always end up in a knob twisting, menu browsing frenzy. I get no playing done. The one I was most happy with was the Yamaha THR 100H, it came with a limited set of knobs and the software couldn’t do much more than change cab sims. It was basically an old amp that produced sound using digital technology.

I have nothing against digital or SS amps. Just make sure they have few knobs and no additional software before you give them to me.

Very relatable response.

No have all Ampegs on bass side..there is not a thing on the planet that will do what a V4b or SVT will do & Have Bug v22, JCM 800 & Sovtek MIG 50 for guitar & all the proper speakers to mic for any genre.

But i do have this...if i must..& its very good at what it does
