You're interested in getting a new or old release by an artist. Do you:

A - Get the vinyl (hoping 180 gram is available).

B - Get the CD.

C - Go to Spotify or YouTube or somewhere. Why pay for music these days.

For the last 15 or so years I've been getting vinyl every time preferring much more a picture disc or color vinyl if it's available. I have a nice 1ft x 1ft case that is filled that is heavier than lead it seems, and another that is half full. Funny thing is I don't have a turn table and none of them have been opened. Not to say I wouldn't open them, it's just that a nice turntable never has materialized yet. I'm talking like a VIP or ClearAudio table ...the real good stuff. I don't want to spin them on a half-ass system. Anyway, it's not really about that.

What is your preference in this regard?

Having an iPhone, if there’s an album I just have to have I’ve downloaded off iTunes. Been a long time since I bought a CD. And not really set up to do vinyls.

It was CD but with a lot the stuff I like being remaster and released with some previously unleash live tracks , vinyl.
The price is however very high.

I think CD works better for me.
I can load it into Sound Forge, increase the bit rate, and store it as a file or burn it to CD.
Of course the files become much larger than normal but it seems to solve the compression that is typical of CDs. It sounds better than the original when the bit rate is increased....
I used to have a lot of LPs but cleaning them all the time became a chore.

These days I stream Pandora and Youtube. If something comes up that I really like I'll buy the CD. I would love to get into Vinyl, but that would require building a stereo system and I just haven't wanted to spend the money to do it. My favorite albums to this day I first heard on vinyl back in the day. Music just doesn't sound as good any other way.

I think I might have just figured out what I need to do with the money when I sell my LP Standard. If I ever do get a system to play vinyl, the first albums I'm going to buy are All the World's a Stage by RUSH and Welcome To My Nightmare by Alice Cooper!

Yes , Spotify. I can't explain why I don't like it.

You do get the sleeves with all the info on the records. Probably not worth it. Cd's never had any good stuff included. It it was all folded up and tiny.

Best thing was when phones had mini usb drives. The dirty big money grabbers took that away.
I have always payed for music.

Vinyl.

There's a ritual; The whole thing of removing the disc, placing it on the turntable, cleaning it and the stylus, lowering the tonearm and always that little "pop - chk-chk-chk" before the silence that's the prelude to the recording...

It's like making tea or coffee...the rituals are important.

Do you really need an expensive system to play vinyl? I'm all over this now and I see there are a lot of mini systems out there with a turn table. Are they any good? Maybe this doesn't have to cost as much as I thought it would. :hmmm:

Ones and zeroes.

Beware of modern mini systems with a USB turntable as it defeats the purpose of analog. I see more than a few espousing the greatness of USB. The signal from the stylus needs to be converted to digital.

Do you all like listening to vinyl on YouTube? Digitized and compressed sh!t.

Ones and zeroes.

What about something like this? I can even dig out my old cassette tapes.

Cassettes 8-tracks were the worst. Cassettes were merely OK for the era. We'd tape out favorite LPs so as not to wear them out as they are simply too fragile. Many of us borrowed LPs with friends to expand our collection. The record companies all insisted we'd kill music through theft.

Homemade cassettes from a decent LP stereo of the day were far better than what the record companies tried to sell us. Chrome or metal tape formulas far surpassed the original ferric oxide.

Pre-recorded cassettes were mass produced garbage using the absolute cheapest materials available, recording at many times the normal speed for fast production. That kills fidelity you know...

Oops, I deleted my post, I couldn't get the link to work. Anyway, I think I'd rather spend more for a better system if I'm going to do it. There seems to be some decent stuff out there between $500 - $1000. I can deal with that.
