So where does music go from here?

Multitrack, MIDI, AutoTune, now A.I. What will happen stylistically to pop music in the next five years? Ten years?

I’m expecting an even greater backlash against digital technologies, and a return to real drummers, acoustic instruments, massed vocals, simplified arrangements in pop, by which I mean “the music that the most people listen to.”

What do you think?

I think you are at least partly right, there seems to be a general digital backlash. I see more and more young people with analog watches, record sales are at an all time high since it first wen “extinct”, and analog photography sees a massive resurgence, driven by people aged 18-30. It wouldn’t be too far fetched to assume the same will happen to music.

I think there will be two camps though. Those who care and those who don’t. With those who don’t care, AI will have a place.

As the technology continues to advance, the counter-reaction to it will continue to gain momentum and popularity.
Still, nothing can stop that leading edge from progressing ever further.

I expect music will continue to diverge and subdivide into ever-more-specific categories.
Not saying there won't be some cross-pollination, of course; that's a good thing in any form of art.

In 2 bands, strait into amps basically, i plug strait into Ampegs, guitars players each only have 3 pedals into great old school amps. keys. 2 dif basic Ludwig kits, it so organic-spontaneous & oh so musically fulfilling..

Also, its simple, once it was all set to kick drum level . no need to adjust anything..let it rip

AI ChatGPT4 is good. Far better than expected in the lyrics I have asked for from it. I do expected it will be used as a tool in composing. I have not had good success yet in vocals. I am likely to new to using it.

I do agree the we are getting to the point of digital fatigue. That will drive people away from artificial musicians. But how would one know listening to anything but live?

Augmented music will grow.

Here in Europe there are already laws that force the marking of AI generated images in for commercial use. I suspect we’ll see something similar in music.

Not sure where it goes from here but I do know the industry has had music by the balls for many years. That grip will only grow stronger. The days of building a big fan base then negotiating with a label are long over. The industry owns and conjures up their products and presents them their way and on their terms.

...And when singularity  does happen, well....
We'll have larger problems than who is creating the arts.

There's a real blurred line between real "A.I." and "advanced algorithm." Most of what we see today is just advanced algorithms and no true, "self learning code."

This will never happen either. Of course someone will program one specifically to do this task, making it appear that the "robot" is doing it at his own devices. More smoke and mirrors as "AI" has always been.

best thing I've heard about A.I. was from a book my wife was reading. The A.I. becomes self aware and discovers that humans and A.I. can't co-exist and it will get dire for both parties in the long run. So the A.I. unplugs itself and dies.

With companies like Gibson, Fender, Marshall, the 10 billion pedal and pickup makers still in business there has to be, in my opinion, people out there still wanting to create and perform rock n roll in some form.
