Gardening thread?

We still have some chilly nights to get through so we are slowly hardening our plants, but we have a whole bunch to put out soon. I bought a wire rack shelf with grow lights to keep our seedlings from taking over the dining room again this year.
Last year voles were our enemies. I hate trapping them, but this year they better watch out....

I used to have a garden, but gave up a few years ago. My wife refused to water it while I was a way for work. She thought it was stupid, until I would make homemade spaghetti sauce from the tomatoes. This year I'll hack through the overgrowth, and then maybe next year give it a go again.

Dude that suuuucksss lol!

When I was in Jr High and High school we grew all our own vegetables and either froze or canned them for the whole year. We grew damn near anything you can think of. We raised our own pork, beef, chicken and eggs, too. We didn't go to the grocery store for food. We had 5 acres and at least 3 of them were used for it all.

Our biggest problems were black birds and rabbits.

I miss having the garden. When I would grow a decent vegetable garden every year, I would always chat with the old woman who's house was behind our house. She also had a garden, and we would trade different vegetables when they were ripe because we would grow different things. I miss having her as a neighbor, and I miss my garden.

Aw. *sniff*

:rolf2:

I kid, but not really, your post brought back memories. We grew way more than we needed and there were a few things that other people grew or made that we didn't so there was a lot of that kind of thing going on. Ah the good ole days...

We have nightly lows of 40s and 50s coming up this week. Make sure to cover your cucumbers!
This might explain why my cukes have been slow so far. We've been in the high 40s to 50s overnights for a couple weeks now. Usually by now we're pretty warm already.

It's coming...I am in the desert after all. Hot during the day, cool at night.

They are pretty temperamental with the cold. Last year a vole took out 5 or 6 of them just a few weeks in, so this year my wife is doing everything she can to keep them alive. I made a little tent for her to put over them at night when it gets chilly lol.

Had time. So why not.
Pic dump:

Squash patch major fail. After almost 2 months, I had a single sprout. It's not growing either, just kinda ... there.

2 rows of beans with about a 20% germination rate, 2 rows of peas with an even less germination rate...I have killed 4 tomato plants here, got ONE to finally live.

My habanero plant nearly died, but I have successfully transplanted it elsewhere, it's still kinda sick but looks to be recovering. Will be interesting to see if it stays stunted or not.

So I collected rocks and made a firepit instead.

Yeah. Stupid idea for a grill stand.
It eventually got weak and dumped what was left of the food in the dirt. As you might expect.

We liked to garden when we lived in our little rural town in western Illinois. Only had to share a little produce with a couple local bunny rabbits. They didn't eat too much. We gave up the gardening thought after we moved. Surrounded by timber. Deer. Rabbits. Raccoons. And who knows what other critter roams the acres.
