Bare Knuckle pickups?

I like the 61's also in my classic , they are not covered.
I see the 61s are available in zebra and reverse zebra used, probably coming out of Classics. I'll be getting a reverse zebra set for my Standard as soon as I have the extra cash. The 490s are another story, I'll be stuck with what I have on those. I am starting to get used to the double black look in my tribute, but not my Standard, it needs zebras. All the coolness left my Standard when I put the covered pickups back in...boring.

I wonder what are under the covers on my stock 61s, but I don't really want to pull the covers to find they are just black.

A while back I bought some of those vinyl bobbin stickers for my 490s, but I just think they're so cheesy I can't bring myself to put them on.

Pull one of the bottom bobbin screws and usually you can see the plastic color

Just be sure you are doing it for sound and not looks alone. I put covers on the '61s in my Classic because I don't like uncovered pickups, and the covers improved the tone. They smoothed the top end ever so slightly and at least for me made them even better.

I do it for sound first, then looks. That's why I have black uncovered pickups in my Tribute, because none of the zebras I tried in it sound as good as the 490s that came in it and they don't come in zebras.

I've never really noticed much difference in covers vs uncovered pickups so I always go for uncovered. It might just be all in my head because I really don't like the look of covers, but I've experimented with it before.

I've kind of put the pickups on hold for a while. I'm still working on getting my cab set up with the right speakers and that's been my priority lately, but I think I've about got that worked out. I'll know later this week when my second Creamback arrives. Plus I kind of ran out of money for the time being.

Thanks, I'll try that the next time I loosen the strings. I'm pretty sure I read that Gibson didn't do any zebras under covers for these pickups tho. The 61s that came in the Classics are uncovered zebra, but the covered ones for the standards are black. At least that's what I understand. It certainly won't hurt to look before I go ordering some.
