Shred before the shredders

I really thought I had a grasp on all guitarist.

So already I know the back story about the legendary blues guitarist but this is about the guitarist we know as being the innovators of genre's.

The obvious players can be easily identified. Most people including the late Jeff Beck and as well Eric (slow hand) Clapton , KK Downing and just about anyone who saw him play guitar would start with Hendrix and that's a good place to start.

After the 60's the shred fest took off like a wild fire. There are a very significant amount of players from this era.
Even though Edward is often the chosen one I don't care for more than 75% of his historical guitar playing. He was a true innovator. He had style and ability but along came many more.

Jason Becker and Marty Friedman were right on the cutting edge.
Of course there's the mind blowing Yngwie. Every guitarist seems to have been an influence to several more and so on is obvious.

So I happened upon this video. Who was Shaw Lane ?
I had no idea. OK, Black Oak Arkansas .
Still not on my radar.
He preceded many of the above heroes and is not really well known.
Since then he has passed.

Shawn Lane says Alan Holdworth was who influenced his advanced playing.I do think it's ironic how he preceded the big names in rock music. But he had major health issues or I think he might have eventually succeeded.

I get it and Holdsworth was unreal, metal fatigue was my first intruduction for me into “not mainstream” prog music so to speak. While I didn’t really follow prog too much was always a fan of Morse and Howe also. But it is a shame when out of this world talent never connects with an audience. So at least people get to see what greatness is.

Saw him at a lakeside bar, hot summer night great evening. Had to be very early eighties.

Bar- venue long gone, replaced with condos that includes membership fees to the marina.

Oh the roof was gone when Uli was done with us. Just a memorable evening of some higher consciousness level playing. He did have the Sky, but also used a white Strat.

Of course. I didn't mention my favorites.
Just the ones that average Joe's gravitate to. Sorry Joe's if you are average. Lol.
Uli is the understudy of Jimmi . The other Jimmy was a favorite of my favorite Michael Schenker. Many players are fans of Michael.
I did not mention Randy, above all for such a short time. He helped shape metal.

If there was more than 100 people there I'd be surprised. Got to speak with the man, just an intimate little show.

Of course he played to the Angels, so he wasn't worried about a low turn out bar gig. He most definitely plays as if he channelling something?
Just flowed all night.

I was very lucky to have been there.

I wish had seen him in Scorpions. I did see him several times. Genius player.
He did shows for Scorpions revisited. That was awesome. I met after one show.

Very jelous, I was just a teensy bit too young. I was in 8th grade when Diary came out and didn't go to my first concert until the next year (sept 82) , which was the Scorps with Mathias. They put on a hell of a show though.

All those guys you mentioned are not shredders Except Marty and Jason.


Shred is different level of playing, some enjoy some say its not musical bla bla…

But its still shredistic :cool:

Who do you think they watched coming up. No one shredded. Those guys were all kids. Loomis auditioned for Megadeth before Marty got hired or maybe around the same time. Dave said he was to young.
You didn't think Yngwie shredded ?

I know the term Shred gets some wound up about what it means. But to those who are just a bit older it includes a bit more as the term was originally used like " hey that guy really shreds those strings", talking about a guy like Alvin Lee. I know the term has morphed intro a whole seperate genre. BTW I bought Steve Vai's Flexible in a record store when it was new. I have Satrianis first LP and Remeber magazenes writing about this guy Gilbert when he was with Racer X (you could not find the EP though). Was a fan of Tony Macalpine, Vinnie Moore and of course YJM and UJR. :victoire: :victoire: :victoire: It's all good.

I was a fan and still am of AL Demiola. But that is Jazz fusion.
