Get Ready

My guy has been doing this for a living for 38 years, I told him I have had a few problems with windows ,nothing that's a big deal except for small aggravating issues. I thought about switching, he said why, the other systems have their pros and cons as well. So I will stay with Windows.
The only reason to use windows is the software is built for windows however Mac is so proud they keep their prices high.
I used to play around with Linux and it is way more fun to me . Free means free.
The developers build the distro's because they like doing it.
I really like Elive. But there are tons.
The security is better , believe it or not.

Many years ago Linux users (also gamers) wanted to run windows games in Linux. Impossible write ?
Wrong , so the introduced Wine Hq.
There windows emulation programs and tons of stuff to run wind -blows even Microsoft bought relationships and developed a Linux emulator.
Winders can help remove itself. Lmao
Notice they have source files available ?
You can compile it yourself or if knowledge permits build something from the source with no copywrite infringement.

Linux runs on almost no resources.
Multiboot. I used to boot 4 different distro's or you can put it on a thumb drive and run live with out installing it. It's better installed though. Used to boot right along side windows once you re-partition the drive.

The difference is with Linux they have forums that will help you and developers are users of their operating systems .
They don't hide behind corporate desks.
I am sorry I got involved in windows cloud back up. What a utter joke. Now once again you must upgrade. Linux will run on Intel core 2 .

Well another step in the process finished, Picked up my new PC and keyboard today. Was happy to save $200 bucks off the PC and $12 off the keyboard and mouse. Now just waiting on my Tech guy to call me back, which will be after New Years. At least now I am ready. Bought another Acer Aspire, has been a very good unit 13 years old with no issues..

When my current laptop runs out of Win10 support from MS, I may have to mess around with Linux. Most likely I’ll get myself a new laptop anyway since this one will be about 10 years old by that point. But we’ll see.

That laptop would be perfect for Linux.
I am considering going apple.

I might try that on one of my old laptops. Heidenhain CNC software is based on Linux, and I use the Heidenhain stuff often at work. Are you still able to use pdfs, word documents, or any of that stuff, or is it more for web surfing and sharing jpg and music stuff?

Yes, libreoffice.

To think that a compact disc would one day be laughed at. Lol

Windows made it easier for people who know nothing about computers, to use computers. This is the sign of a REAL hacker ...

We skipped past the Apple 2 and Commodore 64. Our first computer was an 8086. Came loaded with MS-DOS and GW Basic. My introduction to PC’s was the A and/or C prompt. Learned to write Batch files to make it easier for other family members to open programs from….. GASP…. A 5.25 floppy. And then later after installing a huge 20mb hard drive. Learned to write some very simple apps in BASIC. Many of the keyboard short cuts I learned way back then I still use everyday. All good fun.

Used these in 1973 to write FORTRAN programs in high school. You marked them with a #2 pencil.

I used those for Cobol and RPG2 from '78 to '81. We had a punch machine by then.

In the machine shop I worked at in '81, we got our first NC machine. It used a paper punch tape. If it got wet, you were screwed. Everyone was so excited when they came out with the Mylar tapes to replace the rolls of paper tape.

C prompt is still a viable interface in linux. Same language except the slash is opposite. You can however use GUI.
Command line is much more powerful.

Well yesterday my Tech called me, so he's coming over tomorrow to set this baby up. Will be glad to get it out of the boxes and get it running. Then there's that learning curve on working with Windows 11..:D The Acer I have now has run flawlessly for the past 15 years, here's hoping this new one will do the same..

Well all hooked up now to windows 11, of course a bit of a learning curve some things are different in getting around..

Getting around, there are differences. Was different figuring out to import pictures from my camera. Lets see here if I can show them. Nope won't work downloaded picture off camera file to big for here I reduced the size says its recognized wont let me resize the picture. Its recognizing my old files putting my new pictures into old file, so wont let me downsize new picture. Windows 11 has some different moves from my last one. I will figure it out over time..
