Your thoughts on this.

If it’s gonna be held over you like some bargaining chip. Then decline. You don’t need that in your life.
Suggest she give it to your brother in law. That will make it easy. Defuse the situation before it starts.
This^^^^ is what I was talking about….pretty much. The “social repercussions” I mentioned were family centered. If it’s gonna be a ball and chain, it’s no “gift”…it’s a tool…of negativity.

It may be the way to go, my only thought was if I sell it I can get the money to her. If the BIL makes a stink I will just let him have it. He doesn’t play but I know he is coming there because of dollar signs. The only good news is I will be working on fixing some things the whole time and I know he won’t be helping me so he can spend his time on his Easter egg hunt. It’s going to be perfect weather for working outside . It’s rained several inches here in the last few days so a little sun time won’t hurt.

That's a tough one, man. On one hand, a guitar is a guitar is a guitar: so as long as you got a good one, who cares right? But, having anything that can be used as leverage against you and held over your head, is a whole other issue in of itself. I honestly don't have a good enough response.

Without getting into your business, I'd ask her why exactly she wanted to give it to you and what made her feel compelled to insist it. If the answer was anything other than she just wanted rid of it, I'd probably step away myself.

We're all family here and I try my best not to air my personal life issues, but I'm currently dealing with something pretty similar to this very thing right now: the G&L Strat. Won't go into specifics but let's just say if I knew then what I know now, I'd left that thing where it came from and have seriously debated dropping it back at the door I got it from ( if you know the story how I got it, piece it together is all I'll say)
