I am on this 80s guitar kick lately. I started thinking about some of the guitarists I listened to back then.
Sure there was EVH, Randy Rhoads, Satriani, and other shred gods of the time.

But then there are other guitarists who were great but didnt elevate to "god" level like EVH, Rhoads, and the rest did.

George Lynch - Dokken / Lynch Mob
Warren Demartini - Ratt / White Snake
Kirk Hammet - Exodus / Metallica
Paul Gilbert - Racer X / Mr. Big

All 4 of them, to me, are great.
If you were to rank them from #1 to #4, where would they land on your list and why would you pick one over the other.

They are all great, but from that list Paul Gilbert is in a class by himself.

The other three? Kinda meh to me. Would rather hear a guy like Nuno than any of them.

Lynch and DeMartini are great players but their bands were cheese.
Hammett is a great player and in the best band of the bunch, but homeboy needs to lose the wah.

I would have to rank them
Paul Gilbert ( He taught the Master)
Saw him (mr.big)in 1992 or 1993 was awesome newyears eve probably more like 92
George lynch
Warren an kirk are bout equal imo

I have it like this.

1) Paul Gilbert - He really is a guitarist's guitarist.
2) George Lynch - He just edges out DeMartini by a hair, He just seemed to be a little bit more of a showman.
3) Warren DeMartini - His style is like George Lynch and EVH combined, But all in all I think He is pretty much on par with Lynch.
4) Kirk Hammett - Loved listening to him play before he went Wah crazy. I'd rank him higher if he lost that pedal.

you kinda gotta ask why Gilbert is really never talked about like other guitarists.

Blows my mind. He is absolutely one of my favorite players, and I LOVE the fact that he plays hardtail guitars these days and pulls off what he does without a wang bar - a lot of other "shredders" could learn from watching that technique instead of using the Floyd crutch..

I watch every video of his I can, and every one is a masterclass in utterly absurd, prodigious guitar playing and being just a really cool human.
