From the mouth of the master.....................Jeff Beck

What were you playing when Hendrix said that to you?

“A Les Paul, which is kind of a sissy guitar compared to a Strat anyway. The Les Paul is heavier, but because of that bulk you can do bends on it more easily. Also, the Les Paul’s lack of a vibrato arm means you’re not wrestling against the spring-loaded bridge all the time.

“The Strat is the ultimate because it’s like having a miniature pedal steel within it. Once you get familiar with where the bends are and where they meld down into a fourth or whatever, you can do all kinds of pedal-steel-like things, which I think are cool. Some of the things that sound the most difficult are the easiest for me.“

But...he sounded like :poo: on a Strat and refused to leave the wang bar alone for 10 seconds. He was always a vastly superior player and had better phrasing, dynamics and tone with Gibsons, and because of the vibrato fixation I stopped listening at some point, it just became tedious. I suspect if Jimi had used Gibsons more he would have been all the better for it as well. All IMHO of course.

I agree 100%.

I got my first two Gibson guitars in 1973 1984 my guitar teacher turned me on to Fender Stratocaster's takes more skill
my hands were sore the first year I got three Stratocaster's 1973 1977 and the killer 1961 sounds more like a 335
my choice on Gibson's or Fenders Brazilian rosewood finger boards my grandfather told me to sleep with 500 woman before marriage
should have taken his advice I have done that with guitars to find out what I like out of my 47 guitars and 50 amps
I only play 5 amps and 12 guitars for the last 10 years. In public I play a Parker Fly Deluxe and a Peavey HP2 NOS they stay in tune
the amps I build it doesn't matter what guitar is used some sound better than others thanks MR Dumble.

I agree 100%.

Exactly what was it that Jimi had said to him?
Since you play with your fingers, do you use heavier gauge strings?

“My guitar is strung pretty lightly now because I haven’t played live for a while. But, by mid-tour, I’ll go to a .012 on the first and a .052 on the bass. It’s self-torture, but you’ve got have that. The great Jimi Hendrix picked up my guitar once and he said, 'What are these rubber bands doing here? You’ll never get tone out of that.' I was really disappointed because I thought I had found what I was comfortable with. But he was right, there was no guts in there. And there was no effort.

“The half of playing blues is you have to suffer the pain of the wire digging into your fingers. And the more you play, the harder your fingers get and the fatter your strings can get.“

Ouch, no. My fingers hurt already.
If you like pain and heavy strings play bass. Lol

Additionally, blues is caused by everyday life not the strings. But he and Jimmi were players for
sure !
