Steve, I saw yours but can’t explain it. I went and checked my 81 LPC, 07 LP Supreme, 79 The Paul, 97 Nighthawk, 12 SG RI, 08 SG Diablo, 79 The SG, 13 SG Supra, 07 SG bass, and my 81 The V. They all follow this same YDDDY format.

My understanding of Gibson serial numbers, post 1977, are the 1st and 5th numbers are the year. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th the day of the year and the last 4 are the production number. The website got it right as a 2012 and the day, 347, is Dec 12th as that was a leap year. The production number is 410 though. Weird that it is stamped model year 2013?

I saw one the other day that was built like in October and was labeled the year after.

Such an impulse buy...

This showed up today. A used Chocolate 2013 Gibson Les Paul LPJ (no binding, no pick guard, minimal nitro layers, satin finish)
The box was destroyed...I was worried (as my last guitar was snapped in shipping)
Neck is straight, frets are excellent.

I first pulled it out and wiped it all down. Looked it all over, it's got a few dingers and rub spots...very cool.

Took it out to the garage and pulled the strap buttons, installed schaller straploks.
Pulled the bridge pickup
Installed a DiMarzio X2N which I had pre-wired to the Gibson plugin for their PC board

Lem oiled the fretboard
Strung it with EB beefy bottom skinny tops
Plugged it in and nothing but super quiet flat buzzy grounding going on.

Pulled the pcb, and plug. Pulled the cover to the toggle, used de-oxit on everything

Put it all back together...still nothing.

I rewired the eBay/Gibson plug thing.... Still didn't work for crap.... Not happy with that. Took me 20 minutes looking at pictures online and comparing wire colors....

So I put the original 498t back in it.
Tuned it up.
Plugged in and it plays.

Sounds ok. Not amazing, just ok.
I re-wiped the back of the neck down, not sure if it's sticky or what, but it was hot and sweaty as heck out there so....

Tomorrow I'll get after wiring that pickup again, or order a real Gibson jack from somewhere.... Maybe I have one on an old sg pcb out there?

It plays well. Setup was easy, ( or I'm just a really good guesser..)

First thoughts:
I think it needs a better nut.
I was afraid the 50s neck was going to be a huge baseball bat like my other LPJ , but it's actually rather thin!
I'll intonate tomorrow as well. It's just too hot and muggy out there to work anymore on it.

I think it looks sick!

Congratulations on a beautiful axe.
I am sure you will have the bugs ironed out soon enough.
HNGD.
I have heard it already and it sounds killer in my opinion

Yes…Gibson releases new year models like the car industry….the new model trim/feature lineups are started around October-ish. That’s when they used to “blow out sale” the exiting stock from the previous model year. Used to be, one could wait until October to December and find a deal/steal. Not so much anymore…not since Henry left.

Well I had a huge break through tonight.

I read up on the pickups in my extra pickup drawer.... Seems like the Duncan Custom is well liked in Les Pauls with some people claiming it's too hot for that guitar.... Literally music to my ears.

I came home after 14 hours at school. Changed clothes, grabbed my Chocolate LP "Sasquatch" I'm calling it.... And headed to the garage to perform another surgery on it.

Wired the pickup into the eBay Gibson PCB board adapter correctly the very first time! ( Small, but mighty victory indeed)

Sounds like a million bucks!

it's different than the beloved Distortion, but still pretty hot! It squeals when called upon and sounds very thick!

I only gave it ten minutes of play, but am overwhelmed with admiration for the new tones from this guitar. It is light years better than that sloppy 498t for sure! I am not sure about the aesthetic, but I have a plastic cover already enroute to take care of that.

Here's a pic of it still on the bench, loose strings, screws missing... But still kinda cool.

I kinda like it like that.
It gives it a more rebellious look.
Completely unrefined, rustic, I’m here to play until your ears bleed look.

Let that Zebra run in the wind!! No cover!!
Glad you are happy with this and there is no funny business.
I have a SD Custom in my Dinky. I don't play the gain you do, but it rocks!!

What is the neck profile like - 60's slim or rounder / beefier?
I heard they are on the more rounder side but not 50's beefy.

Now I will go back to playing - the Teles I've been into lately. :hide:

It's like in between a 50s and a 59 and roundish. It's not bad, I prefer them a little thinner, but I won't complain about this one at all.

Cracking myself up over here with this aesthetically enhanced Gibson LPJ that looks like a custom ha ha ha ha ha.

I know a lot of people really get all fired up about it but I think it's hilarious. I'd never try to pass it off as a custom or anything. But if someone asked I would answer that it's really one of a kind
