I could easily do it. If I could transfer within my company to Germany, or anywhere along it's western border, I'd have half my family and many friends already there. I would prefer up north anywhere around Kiel, Flensburg, or Lübeck. I couldn't live anywhere where I can't smell the ocean.

that move seems to be trendy these days.
I think distancing from chaos is a wise choice, and wish you luck. Cali seems like a madhouse to me,
actually most of the left coast, and I follow the socio-political scene with interest.
My wife and I live in a tiny village, she longs to be closer to the kids, but I do NOT look forward
to moving closer to any city for retirement. Nice to visit, but a big NOPE for general living for me.
Every place has it's plusses and minuses. Here health care and many services are hard to come by.
But the air and water is clean, crime is low, it's very quiet, and close to lots of wilderness.
I do pine for a shorter, milder winter someday. But too much heat/humidity is tough to bear for canucks.

Probably would not surprise anyone to learn how many people that work here (San Diego) live in TJ. As for leaving the US, I don't see why not. This country hasn't done much to better or distinguish itself in any way during my 57 years in it and the way things are going doesn't seem likely to get its head out of its ass anytime soon, so I almost envy people that are in a position to leave in some ways.
