How many remember the television show, “The Rockford Files,” from back in the ‘70s?

Well, I just discovered that the series is on Amazon Prime Video. I’ve watched a couple of episodes. Right now, it can be watched free, with ads. This is basically like it was originally anyway, because it originally had commercials.

I always liked that show.

I just got in from turning the old cable boxes in, and canceling my cable tv service. I’m officially “streaming only”, as of about 2 hours ago, now. There‘s so much crazy stuff out there now, I feel like the old way of watching “tv” seems to only apply to sports anymore.

I set up for OTA too! Just an indoor, flat/mat, antenna. I wanted to have access to Svengoolie, and didn’t want to add another streaming service. So, I got an AirTV 2, and a SSD for DVR for the OTA rig. It’s a shame that my local hockey team doesn’t air games at all, locally...but football does. :)

I cut the cord about 10 years ago. I put a HDTV antenna in the attic. A little known gem was that Windows 7 had a completely functional DVR built right in. It could record 4 channels simultaneously. I bought two 2 channel HDTV signal to Ethernet adapters. Bought a dedicated laptop with a 1TB drive. We would record all kind of shows/series. If they were crap we just deleted them. I was paying something like $130/month for Spectrum TV and 2 DVRs. The laptop was $600 and the adapters $90 each, so the break even point was less than 6 months. We also had Netflix and Prime.

Now it’s YoutubeTV, Netflix and Prime.

Yeah, I had a similar setup for Mac starting around 2011, but had no solution for my hockey fix until last year. My rig is outdated now. I went with Sling and Fubo for about $90 per month less. They give me access to every game for my favorite team(including any possible playoff games), with the exception of the 4-5 that air exclusively on ESPN+/Hulu (that I’ve been subscribed to for the last two years, since they pulled that stunt). They both have DVR services available too.

I find it much more functional than my previous rig as I had to abandon that when the Windows 7 DVR service (the TV listing service) went away. With YoutubeTV, the cloud is your DVR. You can setup diffent users and each will have their own library of their preferred recorded shows. Now anything I DVR I can watch on any TV, iPad, computer etc. You can also pause live TV for bathroom or drink breaks too.

I have a friend that when he travels he takes an Amazon Fire Stick with him that has the YouTubeTV app. He can plug that into the hotel’s TV HDMI port and then watch anything from his DVR library of recorded shows.
