Setting Up PA Three Times For One Gig

I just got back from one of the oddest situations I’ve run into yet at a gig.

We arrived at the venue and began setting up at the venue’s outdoor stage. We were mostly done, with the exception of the lights, when it became apparent that we were about to get rained out.

So, we talked to the venue manager and tore everything down and relocated indoors. It’s a good thing we did because it began storming pretty heavily shortly after.

We were all finished setting up indoors, had completed sound check, and were literally just a couple of minutes from starting when the power went out.

After waiting for about an hour and a half, we talked to the venue manager again and decided to cancel. But, just when we had finished tearing down the PA, the power came back on.

Well, we convened a brief meeting of the band members and decided to set things back up and get in as much as we could. While we set the PA up for the third time, the band leader quickly put together a revised set list for our time remaining.

So, we essentially played a single extended set. Fortunately, the crowd was really into it. It ended up being one of our best gigs, though decidedly shorter than most.

I guess me playing acoustic at church wasn’t such a bad deal. I walked in with one guitar, a gig bag with odds and ends in it, and my small pedal board set up for acoustic. If I took my time….. maybe 15 minutes on both ends. And that would include walking from and back to my car.

Well, glad you had a good show despite the shorter time and all the absolute BS you had to go through with the rig! I know it's about as realistic and simple as getting a bear to poop in a toilet, but for the headache and 3 basically setups; the venue should've tossed a few extra bones your way. Again, yeah right huh? Lol
Or at least a free beer. I mean after all. Didn’t Malcolm require a bottle of JD be on stage when they played? Just sayin’ fellas.

Absolutely! Take what you can, if they won't pay extra lmao Im not ashamed to admit it, but when we played out years ago, one venue burned us TWICE and upon the second time, it was none other than @froman5150 who decided to start taking other stuff in exchange. One thing he snatched was a nice Led Zeppelin Tapestry off the wall but told them directly what he intended to do and they let it happen. Basically, we started strong arming them at his cue lmao

Hey, I never said follow my examples!

Actually, this venue has treated us very well and has us play whenever possible. I don’t know what our band leader worked out for arrangements given the odd situation. But, they’ve never tried to stiff us.

The management would have been willing, I think, to let us continue tearing down, but it was our idea to set back up and play anyway.

The crowd appreciated it!

Oh man I was just joking with ya about ripping off some swag lol no that's awesome they treated you all right and worked with you throughout all the setbacks. That's great!

We had all that about 20 years ago, not only were we carrying the PA and various guitars, we were also shifting Bobby Arechiga's drum kit on and off the outdoor stage dodging storms most of the day. I swear he had more drums than the average drum shop...
