I was standing about five feet from our hummingbird feeder. A hummingbird shows up and hovers in front of my face about three feet away, just staring at me. A few seconds later, hummingbird #2 swoops in and lands on top and locks on to the hovering hummingbird. They both go spiraling down till they land on the lawn. Crazy chirping going on while all of this is happening. Hummingbird #2 releases its grip on #1, and flies up to the feeder. #1 gathers its composure, and flies away.
I really do think that when they were chirping at each other, #1 was shouting: “F***-off, F***-off!”… While #2 was yelling: “F***-you, now get off my lawn!”
I've never seen that before.
The bullies are called Rufous. They “defend” what they consider their territory. We have a few here.I was standing about five feet from our hummingbird feeder. I think you may have missed a golden "cool hat" opportunity!I safely removed and relocated this male to a nearby hillside where serpents congregate, when one of my neighbors found him while gardening.
