You are correct. Image seems to be more important to most than tone, and specifically, how much someone paid for a particular piece of gear, seems to be what i hear most frequently discussed.

But, when you are in the presence of true musicians, all that nonsense fades away, and we have real conversations, without anyone trying to impress with their receipts.

They are essentially rebranded Sovtek amps, as EHX sort of owns them under the blanket of the New Sensor Corporation, lead by Mike Matthews: same founder of Electro-Harmonix.

Since Sovtek switched solely to tubes, the amp division was taken over directly by EHX and yeah assembled here now with the parts sourcing out of Saratov, Russia (not sure how the near-global Russian products embargo affects the builds of these now, though).

The Sovtek MIG amps have a cult following of fans due to their price and simplicity. Notably, they were built from Soviet military grade components ( hence the name) by American designer Tony Bruno. Some claim they were modelled after JCM800s using 5881 tubes with an additional preamp circuit, others say it's a Fender Bassman design. Personally, with no master volume, I'd say it's closer to a Bassman in design. Regardless, these amps are a continuation of that

^^^^ THIS! ^^^^

Definitely Bassman/JTM45 dna! The EH MIG-50 at $800, is a very reasonable price for this type of amp.

Cool article on the Sovteks…

Ill go with the new looks cheap you don;t want any amp with the tube sockets mounted on the main PCB
looks like plug in your Chinese made board to the Chinese made transformers assembled in USA
the original Sovtek amps used Russian military spec parts only have had to change the control pots and tubes.

I think we were all waiting for your predictible response...but, yes, PCB mounted sockets are less thank desirable.

Brad Whitford is selling off a lot of his collection. I wish I could get one of his Hamer guitars! But Brad Whitford is also selling his Mig-50! Now's your chance that you've been waiting for...

Honestly, when you posted this, i did not know who Brad Whitford was. My only knowledge of Aerosmith was Steve Tyler and Joe Perry. I had never really listened to any of their work beyond "Dream On" and "Walk This Way."

So, tonight, i listened to quite a few things from their catalouge and i found myself really wondering what all the fuss was surrounding Aerosmith.

First of all, its kinda confusing trying to figure out what they are from a genre perspective and i did not hear anything that totally floored me in any of their work.

I like 5881's.
5881s can be really cool in the right situation! Marshall used them for about 3 years in the early 90s when the world suffered an EL34 shortage. Mainly it was the JCM900 Dual Reverbs and SLXs. For the SLX it's probably more common to find a 5881 model than it is an EL34 due to the short run they had. Those have a different character to them, almost more American sounding you could say ( makes sense considering it's NEARLY an identical match to the 6L6GB with some slight difference's).

@syscokid - used 6550's in the 50 watt MV build

Probably why I like them because I had a Dual Reverb JCM 900. That is one of my favorite amps.
