Guitar Skill

@Clockworkmike - i worked 8 years in a recording studio - full time - and still can't name all the chords that i know, and yet, i remained steadily employed in the field.

Lessons only served to confuse me.

I told a producer once, when asked about a difficult project, " I think you neec a better guitar player for this project."

He answered, "Nope. I need a team player, and that's you."

I just try to play for the song and give it my all.

If it works, it works! You can go to culinary school abroad and learn how to bake a beautifully appealing cake. But you could also screw around your kitchen long enough and practice thru trial and error and make something that isn't nearly attractive but tastes just as delicious.

That's how i personally approach the guitar: a hot mess that doesn't taste too awful lol

I know how that feels with singing. I try and spend endless hours but know I have no real talent for it. No band ever wants me and if I post clips of me with an ad I never get contacted. I've found that I know I've "learned" to sing by what I am doing and it feels right; however I'm one of those people that just don't have the beauty in my voice. That, regardless of practice, keeps one out of the game.

Don't feel so bad and just have fun doing what you do. If you suck, have fun sucking if you can - I'm sure there are things you can do on the guitar and with recording that can make you happy. Remember too that it's all subjective - you are an expert to someone else that does not play as well as you do.
Thanks brother Sap, that means a lot!

I guess I need to find the looper in hx stomp. That thing has so many options!
Yep…it can be a big help. But there’s some out there that are a bit of a pain. It’s funny where they pop up too…My Flashback X4 has spent more time in looper mode than it has in delay mode. The one in the Kemper is kinda limited, and short, and requires the floor control unit to function…but it does work really well. My TC Ditto is super simple, and seems to fulfill my usual desires in the looper arena. There are other fancier options out there, but I usually just want to play….and the Ditto doesn’t get in the way.

I do have a pile of song books. I could try to push through one song maybe just to try a different approach. My friend swore by those books. I might need to learn the songs I like . However I have sort of resisted putting in the work in tab.
I am a lot like you James.
And a lot like @Clockworkmike .
I did take some lessons, if given enough time, I can tell ya the notes on a page of sheet music.
But I can’t read it fluently to play it.
And I forget things that I have played just a couple of years ago, and most of them are my own creative piece’s.

But I keep chipping away at it , and without a backing track to play along with, I can’t solo for $hit.

But that hasn’t stopped me yet.
And with my iPhone I can record a great deal of my ideas, even if they are overlapping of one another.

But it does relieve stress.
Keep at buddy, and I will as well..
We have music to make.

Cheers
Mitch

Thank you Mitch. I appreciate that. I was just arranging a couple of tunes I had and some parts are OK. I just didn't think either of them were worth posting.

I practiced a lot while drinking in order to simulate actual performance conditions.
