But for the purposes of how Fender does it, its not based on the cost of the components, just how much they contribute to the finished product.

If you put a $199.00 neck on a Stratocaster vs. a $699.00 neck, the percentage of completeness doesn’t change, at least not in my head anyways.

Well, then my assessment is probably a little off the mark. If that is the standard Fender uses, one almost has to consider the body and the neck to be of equal contribution. You really have to have both to have a guitar, of any variety.

My way of looking at it was more directed toward the idea of how important is each component to the functionality of the overall piece. To me, in a solid-body guitar, so much of the basic usability depends on the neck being built to certain specifications. A great deal has to be built to very exact criteria.

How much they contribute in which way? Functionality? Weight? Volume? Cost? Value?
 
It’s a very interesting question, Robert.

I tend to agree with Smitty’s assessment but I am looking at it from a player’s standpoint. The neck is the most important part, IMO. If a neck doesn’t feel great and play great, the guitar is not desirable to me. I have never bought a guitar because I liked the body but needed to change the neck.
