Let’s talk Strings

I only use these, most popular brand according to Amazon, I have tried different brands, but now all I use . Never had a broken string in eight and a half years, I change them out once strings become dull sounding, which has been turning out to be approx every 3 months . 10-46

Watch out for counterfeit strings on Amazon. I Only buy at well known music stores.

I am happy so far with the Stringjoy 11/48 for drop C tuning. They are comfortable and they actually sound better than the 10's especially the high E.
I just bought sets ernie ball 9's and 3 sets D'Addario 9 / 42 also.

I've never tried their strings, but the String Joy site is a wealth of good information. Those guys have really done a deep dive on strings.

Maybe one day when I've feeling particularly experimental, I'll try a pack of their strings.

I will be buying more for sure. I don't know how this set up will work in Drop D.

I have not been playing much lately, since going to work for the law firm. To say that this was a career change woukd be an understatement. However, i am still pulled in for session work from time to time, but I'm no longer hammering my guitars for 8 hours a day, everyday, plus gigging at night too.

The only strings that could hold up to my abuse was Ernie Ball Paradigms. 010's, but i felt like they were a little heavier than i liked in terms of fluidity of bending, especially in the very expressive passages with heavy, dramatic bends.

I know some guys favor really heavy strings, and wound g's, etc., but i cannot execute certain steep bends with anything like that and i don't want to feel inhibited when i play.

I'm now really leaning towards the Ernie Ball Paradigms in Hybrid .009 x .046 which have a phenomenal feel.

I'm thinking that i may be able to get by with those now that I'm not playing daily for a living...

You guys make me feel bad. I don’t change strings as often as I probably should. Don’t remember last time I changed the Ovation…. But it hasn’t been played as much lately either. The Strat is probably due since that has been my guitar of choice lately.

As for string gauge. I did try 09s on the G400 when I got it. After playing acoustic forever that was strung with bridge support cable, I found I was incapable of playing the electric with a light enough touch to not fret every string sharp when I played. Tried 10s and that helped. On the flip side, since I already had them. First time I swapped strings on the Strat I used 10s. Did not like that at all.

So today…. My Fender scale guitars have 09s and the Gibby scale (G400 and Hagstrom Viking) has 10s. That seems to work for me.

Edit: PS. The acoustic is still strung with 12s.

No reason to feel bad, I had those 11/48's
sitting on my desk for months.
I Finally got a guitar I could put them on.
I have bought several guitars lately and lots of strings. I do play certain guitars more.

I'm ordering up some Ernie Ball Paradigms in Hybrid .009 x .046 which have a phenomenal feel. I think those are a great compromise.

I have a Nashville session players Telecaster that I built for him in a 24.0" scale and that will get a set of Paradigm .010 x .052's as that's what the brass nut has been cut to accept.

10-52 paradigms are what I use myself. They got enough thickness for the lower 3 strings to accept detuning well, but still keep the higher 3 strings light enough for bends still. Not as easy as 8s or 9s of course, but I like the fight anyways lol

Right! LOL!

I only use .010 x .052" on Mustang and other short-scales, like my 24.0 inch Von Herndon.

My back up Les Paul is tuned a full step down and i use .010 x .046 on it exclusively.

I like using .009 x .046 on the Stratocaster at standard tuning.

I too only use paradigms. Especially working on my EP. I’m heavy handed when it comes to my rythm playing. I like to hear the percussive thud on palm mutes and really attack the strings, my lead playing I incorporate a lot of bends usually. Take that into account of hours of playing either just working out the construction of the song or making sure the timing is as perfect as I can possibly get it, my strings go through a LOT of abuse. Never had a single issue with paradigms, they hold up well and keep their tuning.
