Carvin 212 vertical Slant vs Randall 212 Rd212-D

I didn’t go through the entire range of channels. I figure, the blue channel is mainly where I live so that’s what I’ll try to capture.

I’m using my Fender E std.
the mic on the Carvin is a Digital Reference. Not the best, but it’s what I have. The Randall has the SM57.
Both about 2 inches away from the grill.

Also. I couldn’t figure out why it sounded so different.
I think my grandson was at it again.
This time with my 10band EQ. I guess he wants to be a sound guy when he grows up.
I just noticed this now while I was writing this post.
So here it is with my grandson’s EQ skills.

Nice and crisp. Move the mic’s to within an inch of the grills….see what happens….:ohno:

Generally we place mics right at the edge of the dust cap, if you want it brighter, put it more towards the middle, a little darker= an inch outside the dust cap. A little movement goes a long way for overall tone. And yes shove them as close as they'll go without touching the grill.
But again.... There are no hard rules, do what you think sounds good.

I found the Randall a bit more boxy, and the Carvin more warm sounding. Both sound wicked and very useable to record.
