Do you mostly play your guitar clean or dirty

As methodical as you are Robert your set up looks like you were in a hurry or just testing it. Are the amps in stereo or are you using one to drive the other? Either way DSL = Dirt. Never played a Germino but I gather they are plexi?

My rig is generally pretty neat, although nothing i have compares to the stuff @67plexi has laying around, but my humble rig has kept me steadily employed for 7 years.

I'll consider that a win.

My early board was really simple:

At one point, i was running a two DSL40C rig through a Lehle Amp Switcher and i added FX for a wider variety of songs:

Then, i switched to a hot rodded Marshall Origin Ivanberg, a team effort between Forum Amp Demigods @ivan H and @syscokid, and a custom made 2x12:

Then i started taking my little 1999 Marshall 50 watt practice amp along instead:

When I'm using the pactice amp, all i use is a clean/dirty switch , show above holding down the setlist:

Evolution....

I try to play my guitar clean, but sometimes I get too lazy to take a shower…

:rolf:

I do actually play clean a fair amount, certainly in a cover where it calls for it but a lot of time too when I noodle out some random Riff: usually starts clean but always ends not dirty but filthy lmao

Dirt does hide mistakes but then again, I take to the schools of Neil Young and Joe Walsh: sloppy, dirty and loud lol

I agree in a performance setting, a more amplified signal (gain) will amplify mistakes.

Norm was coming at it as when learning or practicing new pieces or chords for correct string ring outs, useful especially for less experienced players like myself.

But...I say practice as you would perform. If you are learning a song that was recorded with a distorted guitar track I do believe it is always better to try to come as close as possible to the original tone, without overdoing the gain, in order to get in the right ballpark. There are overtones and harmonics that will show up in a driven tone that won't bet there in a clean one, and what if there are pinch harmonics or something?

Plus, can we all just be honest here and admit that playing clean is boring? ;)

At home, pretty clean for the most part. If I'm just practicing, learning new stuff, or writing, I'll keep it clean to work on accuracy. If I'm feeling more confident about something and wanting to move along further with something, I'll add a little dirt.

When jamming or gigging, I like the natural distortion created by volume. The ES-335 works perfect for this as I'm using a JTM45 or Hiwatt. It's a little more over the top than my Billy Bo, Les Pauls, SGs, or Firebird. If I want any extra girth, I stick to drive pedals like the Drybell Engine or Prince of Tone, and for solos I boost it with my Klon KTR. I do like the occasional Treble Booster, but have always had a tough time finding fuzz pedals I like.

I think it's interesting hereing some live tracks for instance the Led Zeppelin "Bring it on Home" track I posted from 1970.

From studio to live the guitar tone sounds more overdrive to me.
I would guess in the studio he used less pedal with the Marshsll and the cab in another room cranked.

I agree... however, when learning new pqssages etc I find if I hit a note half on with clean it goes clunk and is an obvious clunker. With nice n dirty, some form of cool harmonic comes out. For technique I go clean. Add pinch harmincs as required once I learn the passage.
When actually practicing songs or playing, it's dirt almost the whole way depending which band.

PS turns out the word tart but starting with an "f" is not allowed here...

Yeah I noticed that too! Lol $#it becomes just the poop emoji but THAT word gets flagged hilariously enough. Surprised it doesn't immediately become "Toot"

Is there a thread to that mod?
Just wondering what the mods were or the focus of them?

Wade should be using the Don Martin Sound Generator to make the word filters. At least that way each of us be challenged to be a bit more of a creative erudite.

Yes....

The actual mods on my amp start around page 12 or 13.....

The tone that grabbed me comes in at 0:47 in this video...

Volume is everything for me, even at home jamming, but i have to run quiet when my wife is home. You CANNOT beat the effect of volume in a small room. The studio recently gave me one of their old isolation cabinets, so at least now i can route the cables into my recording studio and nobody hears the volume....
