Got a text from my boss today with this pic.


Message said "Got any use for this?"
I said if it's free, I'll take it.
He said they found it in the shop on a shelf they were cleaning, come and get it.
Scrap of grill from the stash and a little ArmorAll:


Actually, it works just fine, for an old SS Crate.
Pots are clean, reverb and the little on/off chorus work.
Sounds like a POS junk 20w Crate with a 10" mystery speaker, but I can't argue with the price.

It would probably sound better with a better speaker.
I don't have any 4 ohm 10" in the pile, and I don't plan on buying anything for this freebie.
Might drop a Weber Cali 8 ohm in there just to see how it sounds.
It'll just drop the output down around 16w.

Ok, swapped in the 60oz. magnet Webber Cali.

It's got a little more thump...
Vastly improved the warmth on the clean channel.
Still has that Crate transistor-y OD tone that just can't get close to even my SS Marshalls.
No way I'm wasting a $100 speaker in a $50 free amp.

That looks like the exact same amp I turned in to a cabinet. Same plastic corners and I have the Reverb tank.
I thought it sounded bad as well.

Saw another GX20-M on GC for $40.
Started thinking if I gut that, extend the baffle, re-grill, pop in the pair of Webers...
No, I don't need another amp.
