Great Idea

I guess that CEOs, upper management, and share holders taking a pay cut to better pay the rank and file to prevent theft would never be an option. People only tend to steal out of necessity.

Necessity or greed.
A homeless person stealing food or clothing may be out of necessity.
Stealing power tools is questionable.
If it’s happening so much that a major chain is going to take steps to spend resources makes me believe it happens too often.

The last time I needed to buy something at either of the big two, all power tools were locked in cages. Then, they had to undo the cable lock with the transmitter chip for the door alarms. They do treat (and pay) their employees quite lousy, so I’m sure they don’t give a rat’s ass if someone is stealing stuff.

The last time I was there, and one of the employees suggested I use the self checkout, I said “Only if I get an employee discount for doing your job.” They said that they don’t get one. I said that they will have to ring it up for me in that case. I’m not buying into the whole self checkout philosophy to enrich someone’s annual bonus. You know it’s not the regular employees getting the bonuses.

As a man in the trades, similarly to SG John, ClockworkMike etc, I am sure you guys have had shady fellas approach you and try to get you to buy used tools off them.

I have empathy for those who have had their tools stolen as they WORK to invest in tools to do more WORK.
My answer to the potential seller is always the same. " Do you have a receipt for those tools?" "I will only buy them if you can show me a receipt"
Oh yeah, CD's DVD's and other hot stuff has been met with my same reply.

And yup, Screw Self Checkout.

Self checkouts, My Wife and I will never use them. We will wait in line for a cashier, no matter how long it takes.
