I opened it up last night to see what type/brand pots it has because they need cleaning/replacing. Much to my surprise my Precision bass has Allen Bradley pots. Is this after market or are these OEM ( Original Equipment Manufactured ) parts? It has at least one flat disk type ( capisitor?) attached to one of the AB pots. The knobs and bridge on this bass are not OEM either I believe. They are gold with a gold bridge as well. When it works without noise this bass rocks. I like to get it back on track again. Any of you bass guys or gals which are familiar with late 70s Fender P bass, please feel free to comment.

1. need pics.
2. its a late 70s Pbass........spray some DEOXIT in there and keep on trucking bubba. ;)
3. I have NO idea on the pots for that year model....perhaps others can help----
4. you can always send it to me for proper evaluation. :)

Thanks Adrian, I'll do the first three. After I slam a photo on the bucket I'll post it on here. I got Deoxit I'll hit it with. It worked cherry on my SR and on some old beater Crate I picked up at Goodwill about a week ago.

THA THING IS FOOGIN GORGEOUS! What a lovely vintage Thunder Stick ! ----well DONE!

The problem is anything that old--- there is NO TELLING what has occurred --- YOur in Cali eh? Perhaps a little ring over to the Fender folks could tell you??
Maybe a "drive by" how close are you ???? WOuldnt that be a good "forum post"= MY DAY AT THE FENDER PLANT get them to give you the run down on your beast......and take a tour -----get lots of pics!!!

I have gotten very good customer service from Peavey, and Dean anytime I call with crazy questions.........

Cheers many sorry not more help but I dont see anything IDENTICAL to what you have in yours.....probably an "upgrade or mod at some point :)

Yeah, it looks like the AB pots are probably after market. The problem with contacting Fender is that I have before and some young guy will answer trying to sound like he knows what he is talking about. The only thing is he was not born when this guitar was first rocking. Those pots you posted looked more like it. The cap in the picture is like the one I got. I may rewire the whole thing with new pots. I have to think about it. I have diagrams from different circas.

Thanks for the compliment on the bass Adrian. This was the first bass I ever picked up and it felt and sounded right when I played it. I got this from one of my best friends with the original factory case for $200 back around 1985 or so. I wish I would have picked up the old Acoustic amp he played it through also. As a rule I like a short scale bass like the Mustang.

Cat, I had a wonky Ashdown bass head. I mean I would adjust the knobs and all sorts of swirly, weird noises would be audible.
I hit all the pots with De oxit and fiddled em back n forth a bunch of times. The amp has worked fine ever since.

Cat when i first started working at the local papermill in 84 alot of stuff was and is still made by AB.So ya ive seen alot of that AB stuff in my day.

I just got done doing that to a Crate G10 XL I picked up at Goodwill about two weeks ago. I vacuumed it, used a wet sock to a few times to get dust off off the tolex-like material covering on it. I took off the knobs and shot the Deoxit on all of them. I went back and forth on each pot about ten times. It now works very well again. I got the Crate because it is all stock original made in USA. I may put a good speaker on it. I have a new Jensen P8R 4 ohm in a box. This one has a Crate ceramic OEM 4 ohm speaker in it now. That Deoxit works great.

I guess the million dollar questions are what kind of pots do I need? Size of shaft? Ohms? The devil is in the details. I know they still make CTS. I will call Fender this week and ask to talk to any older tech which is still alive and well.

Cat, maybe it won't need anything after the deoxit?

LOVE it-----
"Give me the old guy in the back that KNOWS whats up!" yes. :)

there are many options---- you can always go with a complete prewired set up
920D Custom Shop PB P-Bass Wiring Harness w/ Knurled Knobs

Made in USA and knurled knobs can be pretty knarly! Sold to the old dude with the 78 P Bass! If the Deoxit don't do the trick I might go somewhere along this route. Prewired would be simpler to deal with also.

15 screws and two larger screws for the thumb rest, to remove pick guard. I didn't even count them the other night when I took the photo. I just counted them off the second picture of "Brownie" I posted. I believe I just Christened this P!
