Possible SG Scratch Build:

Funny thing is, Robert.

When it comes to cars or trucks, I can see all manner of New Year 2000+ ___________ XYZ brands and models, and yet if I had my druthers, I would opt for a reliable and cheap to drive one of these, or these, or these_________ that I pick up for $1, $200 to a few thousand and drive the wheels off it.

Well, with guitars, my list of requirements is pretty daunting.

I need perfectly leveled and crowned fretwork, zero noise under all conditions, excellent attention to detail and stable tuning.

There's a reason I never wanted Mom's Norlin-era 1979 Les Paul Custom.

It's noisy. It hums and buzzes like most Gibson's, even with the 'ashtray' and I believe it's in the pickups themselves.

There just isn't anything about it that I find endearing...and that's pretty much consistent with what I've experienced with vintage Gibsons.

Now my 2021 Gibson Les Paul 50's Standard Gold Top is a much better guitar. Better neck angle, and better tone, even though it is susceptible to RFI because it is unshielded.

TBTH, there's no way a production line guitar could ever compete with a hand built guitar that was put together on an unlimited time frame.

Neck through???

Only ONE Gibson SG ever had it and that was a 12 string single neck, and even then, none of the neck sections were interlocking.

I can build a better guitar....

Well, Yeah,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Same can be said for Ferrari's, GT40's, Nascar and F1 cars. No one in their right mind would get on the track behind the wheel of a Factory assembly line Mustang/ Camaro/ Mopar/Toyota etcs to try and beat 30 other Racing drivers with the Race Team mechanic built cars.

I use to have 1 of these & it started out just like that 1......I also had a 5.0 5spd F-250 4x4
old ass polaroids...lol

Rob V, I never had 3 girls all hot like that by my cars.

My 88 F250 is a 5 Speed too, but a 351W with 337K Work Truck miles on it. Love that ZF Tranny.
Wish Gas wasn't so dam expensive so I could actually WANT to drive it again.

That was at the Low Rider Magazine Nationals in El Paso,Tx 1994. I won 3rd place in Mild Street Customs & they took some pics for the mag. My brother had some other pics I left at our old house he sent me, think they are on the old computer still.

Will you be scarfing the Maple at the headstock so you don’t end up with strange patterns in the wood? Or are you painting a stinger to hide it?

No scarf joint. The individual, interlocking spars are one piece. We even added headstock "wings" as a kind of "Easter egg" of sorts.

This guitar will be stained black, then sanded, stained dark mahogany, then BLO'd, topped with amber shellac and finally topcoated with lacquer.

My colleague has a home workshop, because we can only get so much done on a 30 minute lunch. He recently stamped the custom serial number for me.

We are just about done with all the major operations.

Body "wings" have been slid into place (they are tongue and groove like the neck) and glued, fretboard is glued down, inlays are in place and the black headstock veneer has been applied.

We had a mutual friend at a guitar builder in San Dimas cut the fret slots and establish the nut position and shelf depth.

We are using Dunlop 6100 fretwire on this build. I wanted Jescar, but didn't have time to wait and our chum had the 6100 on the bench.
