FRIDAY NIGHT RIFFS

Just using my phone speaker....
I prefer the 2nd of the 2 in the full mix and the naked mix. Liking the 1st example better with just drums.

Is there a touch of chorus in there? That will throw me off ha ha.

I think I know which is the hotter pickup but I'll won't guess until I can hear it in proper monitors.

I love comparison sound bytes by the way.... Love them.
Thanks for the info.

No chorus, but I did play it twice each time, once left and once right.

The third time you played it sounded like it had a little less bottom end
I'm very confused...

It's:
1. Riff Guitar A w/drums & bass
2. Riff Guitar B w/drums & bass
3. Riff Guitar A w/drums
4. Riff Guitar B w/drums
5. Riff Guitar A
6. Riff Guitar B

So, you're saying the first one without bass sounds like there's less bass?

HA! I miss read your initial post.
Well ... I wasnt wrong, lolololol!!!

Ah double tracked, that's what I thought I was hearing but guessed a touch of chorus.

I'm not hearing much of a difference for sure. 2nd take sounds a little fuller in the low mids which makes me think it's the upgrade. Also I may hear the 2nd track start to feedback a little earlier?

You have enough gain to make lots of pickups sound good.

Some stock pickups can sound good enough, bc rich, Gibson... Certain dean's. For the most part they aren't spicy enough for me. I'm not very familiar with Ibanez, only had 1 and it was hot enough.

Cool tracks bro!

Got into playing again today. This time I picked up the SG. It's tuned to D STD. I think thats my favorite tuning ... for this week;)

Here are a couple of things I did tonight.
Hope you like them.

Good stuff. The first one sounds a bit muddy, like maybe that riff needs a different guitar with more articulate pickups/voicing. The second one is on point. Killer riffs, regardless of tone.
Your inner Ramo is coming to the fold...

Cheers
Mitch
I was thinking the same thing. Except I think Ramo is allergic to SGs. :ROFLMAO:

Thanks Headache!

So, the first one is a stock "crappy" Ibanez INF2 pickup. The second is a Seymour Duncan Solar. Always had a very bad opinion of the INF, until I got hold of this one. Makes me wonder if the INF QC is all over the map and some sound good and others not, as I had a set for a long time in another guitar and they were very thin - but these ones are clearly not.

Had a recent discovery, dovetailed with seeing a video from Fluff on not needing aftermarket pickups. So, I tossed together this blind test to see who prefers which pickups.

It's the same riff, played with two different sets of pickups in very similar guitars thru the exact same rigs. The first pass for both is with drums & bass, the second just drums, the third just guitars.

Which do you prefer? Do you hear any major differences?

I think they both sound fine and pretty much the same. Definite Sludge Factory tone. To me there are no notable differences to speak of.

Here's tonight's riff idea rattling around in my gourd.

Now THAT was a proper riff!!! Like being served a great dinner. Not too little, not too much ... just enough to leave satisfied!
Great work.

Just an FYI, if your explorer is ever stolen. Know that I took it. I'm not an explorer guy, but I'll make an exception for that black and white beauty.

Ok, now that most everyone has had a chance to weigh in, here's what you heard:

First pass: 1994 Ibanez INF2 pickup > Axe FXII XL - Soldano Lead 100/Uberschall 412 w/T75s
Second Pass: 2021 Seymour Duncan Solar > Axe FXII XL - Soldano Lead 100/Uberschall 412 w/T75s

For me at least, in the full mix you almost can't tell them apart - when solo'ed, there's definitely differences and I prefer the Duncans, but a lot of those differences get lost in cymbal wash, etc when the drums and bass are going.

I think Headache dissected the tone closest to what I hear, "a little fuller in the low mids which makes me think it's the upgrade. Also I may hear the 2nd track start to feedback a little earlier?" and I hear a bit more articulation in the Solar ones' subharmonics.

My first set of INFs left a really bad taste in my mouth as when I ran them through my old JCM900>Carvin 412 stack they came thru very, very thin. This set doesn't seem to do that at all (I also ran these ones thru my JCA100HDM>Randall 412 and had similar results).

And, this is the video that I mentioned, as well:

How do you like that Epi Explorer? I have a buddy trying to sell one and it's piqued my interest. Normally, I'm a Super Strat and/or Warlock guy, but there's something so iconically metal about an Explorer...

I own 2 and they are the best playing and sounding guitars I own. Truth.
They are heavy metal machines!
If I could only keep 1 guitar, I'd choose one of these epi explorers.
The balance and the hugeness of their sound coupled with their flat and comfortable form factor is my favorite. I mean I love my Vs, my MLs, and even my Paul's, but not like these explorers.
