The amps I use all have NOS tubes they cost five times more but last 5 times longer my day's of flying all over the world
servicing private amp collections are over. What got me I do repairs for my local music store they are to supply tubes
last year at wholesale back order put the whammy on my personal stash then the customers cry about the price fixing Asia-Pacific
junk. I decided no more. Been happy rebuilding mono blocks will still restore vintage amps.
I was able to get 5 NOS RCA 12AX7 down to one.

Exactly the point of buying quality components! They are more expensive ONLY at the initial time of investment…in the long run they are usually less expensive, or equal. There is also the fact that you likely avoid FIVE inconvenient failures during their service life that could possibly have negative repercussions on surrounding components.

The older vacuum tubes made with Lead Mercury Strontium Arsenic etc, lasted longer.
That's a big part of it, what materials they were made from.

The environmental regulations ended use of toxic metals.
The newer components will never be the same largely because of environmental regulation.

Lack of viable substitutes for toxic metals (and other) environmentally reprehensible materials has a factor / reduced the quality of the product.

They say the most expensive tool is the one you buy over and over

That is why all of my amps have old, quality (top shelf) made tubes in them. When I started down the slippery slope of buying a few more amps in 2007, I wasn't sure what I was getting into. I wasn't that knowledgeable about amps, and thought a Marshall is a Marshall. The four hole input amps are the ones you want.

Well, when I was visiting England in 2008 and spent some time at Lex Lurid's (ETSG person) house playing a few Matamp amplifiers. I tried stealing one, but it didn't fit in my suitcase. Before leaving, he handed me a box, and said "you'll be needing these for your JMP." It was a full compliment of NOS Blackburn Mullard EL34s and 12ax7s for my amp. They have been in that amp since 2008. When I first installed them, I was playing that amp about three times a week for 3-4 hours at a whack, and at very loud volumes between gigs and the rehearsal complex we were in.

Now, it only gets played about once a month, and still sounds great. It is usually splitting duties with my '64 Bandmaster. That amp has old NOS RCA 6L6, 7025, and 12ax7s in it. If you look at any of my amps, you'll see very good tubes in them. And, they are all reliable. Plus, I have three boxes and some overflow of extras of everything, except maybe 6L6s. Non of my amps have failed in over 15 years, and they all sound great. Other than some occasional TLC and preventive maintenance, they are all ready to plug in and sound great. It's like anything, even food. Crap in, crap out.

It's also why when I built my JTM-45, I wanted all the period correct stuff for the project. It ended up sounding as good as I hoped as a result. So far, it has been holding up very well.
