A Student Told Me He Wanted To Quit:

Did you ever consider that you are doing the same thing that you spoke out against.

The point you spoke out against: You can't be a good guitar player unless you have expensive gear

The point you made while doing so: If you are not a pro, you really don't know gear and tone

I really feel like this is being taken out of context.

How many times have you recommended a fret file or a piece of gear to me???

I find value in your opinions.

You - nor anyone else here - was the subject of my comment.
It is not about me. I KNOW that I know something about gear. It is for all the "students" of gear who might want to render an opinion who you just invalidated.

Ding!ding!ding! dismissive…not blunt.

No, you just tried to say that you did not mean what you clearly said AFTER you were called out on it.

Robert, no-one doubts you have a good heart towards others. However, you are usually very willing to consider that you may have made a misjudgment. Maybe you might consider that fact that you may have bias

....allegations of some clandestine effort to render the opinion of a hobby player as "meaningless."

However, I do consider those who make others feel inferior based on opinions unsupported by fact to be "meaningless."

Tis getting blown all up.
No clandestine operation here at all.
None of us were the subject to be sure!

The way it was worded, and some other recent posts, seemed to indicate that all non pro players opinions mean very little.
Which of course, is no more correct than the ones badgering that poor kid.
In my opinion.

Also, while we are on it, I dislike Teles too. Just the shape, tone and style of them. Other than that they are ok! :p
But others feel free to use them!!

I've always been a "black sheep" and that's not likely to ever change.

@RVA - half of the tools I have, I bought on your specific recommendation.

You avoid this fact.

Re-read post #1.

People who trash other people, their social status, gear, race, religion or anything else, have "meaningless" opinions as far as I am concerned.

Making someone dissatisfied with what they have with a statement like "Your Squire sucks," is a helluva lot different than, "you would get a better tone with ______."

Honestly, Guys...

I'm not going to pander to public opinion.

So, I would simply say this.

If you find someone so offensive, or their views so utterly foreign, why not just block them?

Seems like economy of movement to me...

Personally not real offended by it. I agree with that too. But your first post also would indicate you add this to above....

..none of these guys play for a living. Their opinions are meaningless

I can see where that might be slightly hurtful to some of those who do not make a living playing.
No?
Possibly could have been worded differently.
That is all.

Why can't we just have spirited debate so as to possibly grow from the exchange?

As I mentioned, my opinion of you as a person remains that you are a kind hearted soul and more like you are needed in this world. However, you said something that I, and apparently others, thought was offensive so I brought it up. If you disregard it, that is fine. However, you should always consider an opinion before disregarding it. Did I really fail to make a valid point?
