I have been asked to mimic B.B. King's tone on a recent recording. They had a big Gibson semi-hollow and all kinds of amps, but couldn't nail it. Now I am not the best guitarist, but I am a highly skilled replicator....years as a kid spent jamming note for note to MTV videos and performing to an imaginary crowd...learning to spin my Squirecaster with a cord in it (try that one) but in the end, I nailed the tone.
How? I listened to King's parts and replicated his technique - the way he attacked the strings - the loosened hold on the pick - I can't explain everything, but I can reproduce what I hear.
When playing AC/DC covers, to nail Angus' s technique you gotta play with a light touch. He's jumping around like a madman, but his touch is very light and he rings through his chords...its very precise.
If you play AC/DC super aggressively, you sound like C.C. DeVille....
