I’m with you on all of the above…Have you ever tried Dean Markley Blue Steel strings? Definitely not better than Boomers, but I like them over the Balls….
 
So you guys can hear a difference in strings? Unless I was to AB them on the same guitar, which is in itself rather difficult, I find no difference. I just get whatever is handy.
Again, I am not overly picky amd perhaps just do not notice.

Yes. Overall timbre, feel, longevity. Proven to me in recordings, and through experience, over the years.
I don’t mean to preach this. This is just my experience…personally.
When I first actively gigged, I liked to have two of the same model guitars for live shows…singing and playing was not second nature to me, and it helped if I had a technical problem with one…to have another that I didn’t have to adjust to. My main guitars for standard tuning through most of the 1990s were Washburn N2 models….one red stained, the other natural…otherwise identical, first run models.

Ah OK. Nothing you could pin down immediately but just over time. I suspect I am just not so picky. I use EBs mostly but even some house brand strings. Perhaps I need to try more types but also I have so many different guitars that I use gigging that there are differences in the guitar pickups etc so it becomes hard to nail down the string differences. I guess as long as I am happy with it...

I always wonder cause everyone talks about string preferences and I feel like a moron. Just whatever is handy, i usually use EBs but have had lots amd never paid enough attention. Not a big enough change right off for me to notice.

I cant tell the differences in string brands or materials myself, save maybe bronze acoustic vs steel obviously. I do however, hear differences in string gauges, as thicker ones boom out more and seem to be louder when you play. Although, its worth sacrificing some thickness for playability too!

Gauges for sure.
Brands not so much for me.

I could never deal with EB's. Just never felt right. I've been using D'Addario since the mid eighties. NYXLS for the last decade or so. I recently tried those S.I.T. things from Ohio, but they were ridiculously bright.

That’s one thing that I engage in from time to time. I maintain around 10-12 electric guitars. Once in a while, I try something new. Usually on something Les Paul like. I buy the stuff I like in bulk(Boomers are available in 6 set packs…I buy two at a time), and I might pick up something random with my order just to try out. If I like it, great…if it lasts, even better…if it fails…back to Boomers(10s on Gibson scale).

I like the 10-46s a lot for good equal balance. I switched to 10-52s because they are somewhat of a hybrid with the 6th,5th and 4th being closer to 11 sizes and the 3rd,2nd,1st being normal 10s. Gives a little more boom and pop on the bassier strings but keeps the high strings the same for bends.
