Robert H. made me do this.

I'm not even sure that's possible.... Seems like he is maxed out on tone potential to me.
Obviously its based on preference, SRV's tone is a pinnacle to be reached IMO. If I had to give an example of what I dont like about high gain tone, just think Zakk, Jake E Lee, Randy, or pretty much anyone who has ever played guitar for Ozzy.
Doesn't make it any less epic to me. Sometimes simpler works, especially when it sounds so good and fits his style so perfectly.
Jimi didnt have the benefit of years of guitar technology development before he showed up. He was working with the onlyavailable at the time but still got useable tones and which almost single handedly lead to the advent of golden era of the guitar industry trying to perfect his visionary ideas for the next generation of slingers.

Yeah, when I first heard SRV I loved the sound before I even knew what guitar he was playing!

Ummm…that’s the beauty of music. It’s individual. Your tastes are yours. Others have different tastes.
You’re basically making a statement of objective fact about something that really comes down to personal preference. This is a category fallacy.
In actuality, my statement is personal preference, based on hearing SRV, at a distance of less than 30 feet. Have you made a similar evaluation?? If so, I'd love to hear about your experience.
While I respect your opinion, you must understand that I'm not so much evaluating his 1984 live tone as a matter of "personal taste," but also how it appealed to me as a performer.
Did it wow me???
Did I want to go home and try to incorporate what I heard in my playing???
Did I hear something in that performance that boggled my mind???
The answer was no.
Great guy, great energy too!!!!
Here's my thoughts behind my post....which may have not come out right.
If you like/love SRV, (or Hendrix or Young or Prince, or???) that's awesome!!! I loved aspects of SRV's playing, performing and songwriting. But, I didn't ever find anything in his playing that I couldn't do or that made me want to embody into my own playing.
When I post that something doesn't appeal to me, for whatever reason, I feel the need to quantify that statement in context so that its understandable. This is not intended to convince anyone that I am right. I'm just offering substance to support why I feel a certain way.
It's more to invite critiquing of those raised points and not to 'throw shade' on anyone...
Our band so far nine years together we go by audience reaction and request. I made Joe Harris our music director 30 years on the road
Joe knows what works songs I'd never choose at practice Joe adds a few new songs to the list funny at sound check I was setting my amps
