It's all about what you like. I just don't love the tonal signature from Teles in general...which is why I dropped my custom Stagecrafters down to 24.50" scale.
Much like SRV. Loved his chops. Tolerated his tone.

Interesting...SRV's tone has to be one of the easiest we've ever replicated in the studio, because his signal chain was so simple.
Much like Hendrix. Loved his stage persona...loved his style and technique, but hated his tone.
Not sure if you heard my cover of 'Watchtower,' but I recorded it on my Les Paul.
Loved Bernie Torme, but didn't bond with his tone either. Saw Brad Gillis live with Ozzy in June 20, 1982 in Bakersfield and his tone was crushing!!!!
Now, again and very interesting to me, I did not really dig Jake's tone, but I truly admired his playing.
My three all-time favorite guitar rhythm tones:
1. George Lynch - Wicked Sensation
2. Randy Rhoads - Flying High Again
3. Zakk Wylde - No More Tesrs
My all time favorite solo tone is Zakk's solo in 'No More Tears.'

Doesn't make it any less epic to me. Sometimes simpler works, especially when it sounds so good and fits his style so perfectly.
Jimi didnt have the benefit of years of guitar technology development before he showed up. He was working with the onlyavailable at the time but still got useable tones and which almost single handedly lead to the advent of golden era of the guitar industry trying to perfect his visionary ideas for the next generation of slingers.
Remember, I was forbidden from listening to rock music. I had posters of Black Sabbath and Scorpions hidden behind posters of Merle haggard (a family friend of my Mom's and she recorded using his band members) and I grew up in her band playing country guitar and twanging away on telecasters.

I got a recording here of me playing the outro solo to Mom's 1979 recording of "Satin Dress," at 14 in 1979, that we recorded at Buck Owen's private studio on Chester Avenue in Bakersfield. I could really play country back then, but I was a closet metalhead....
Yeah, when I first heard SRV I loved the sound before I even knew what guitar he was playing!

I've seen SRV perform in Fresno on Friday, November 23, 1984. Great playing and good live sound in terms of overall mix, but his tone, even in the first row, wasn't any kind of "Sirens Song."

In actuality, my statement is personal preference, based on hearing SRV, at a distance of less than 30 feet. Have you made a similar evaluation?? If so, I'd love to hear about your experience.
While I respect your opinion, you must understand that I'm not so much evaluating his 1984 live tone as a matter of "personal taste," but also how it appealed to me as a performer.
Did it wow me???
Did I want to go home and try to incorporate what I heard in my playing???
Did I hear something in that performance that boggled my mind???
The answer was no.

@smitty_p - we are fundamentally different musicians...and that's OK. But, I don't - arbitrarily - make statements that haven't been carefully evaluated.
Here's a live SRV Performance.
Humor me and listen to this live, 1992 Gary Moore performance.
The difference in the performance is just overwhelming.
The quality of the live recording notwithstanding (totally phenomenal) but Gary's playing is both ferocious and intricate.
Gary is running his a amps wife open. Notice how he has to roll the volume off after each volley just to keep things under control.
Gary is like a Slobbering Rottweiler to SRV's snarling Chihuahua....
Maybe it's just that I admire his architecture of sonic aggression, but his performance made me want to be a better performer.

First, please accept my most heartfelt apologies if I offended anyone.
If you like/love SRV, (or Hendrix or Young or Prince, or???) that's awesome!!! I loved aspects of SRV's playing, performing and songwriting. But, I didn't ever find anything in his playing that I couldn't do or that made me want to embody it into my own playing.
When I post that something doesn't appeal to me, for whatever reason, I feel the need to quantify that statement in context so that its understandable. This is not intended to convince anyone that I am right. I'm just offering substance to support why I feel a certain way.
It's more to invite critiquing of those raised points and not to 'throw shade' on anyone...

levels Keith my sound man of 37 years setting the levels of my amps through the mains and monitors, I adjusted my Eventide Micro Pitch
playing EVH Humans Being crowd went nuts so we opened with that song surprise found out EVH is still in fashion 2021.
I had a line of hot girls to the front of the stage all 8's 9's and 10's Joe ask me yesterday what songs did they request none
I showed him 30+ names with phone numbers. I love the music sport.
