New Speaker Enclosure (In Progress).

So, I've begun the process of building an enclosure for the speaker for my new Rivera amplifier.

A few notes before we dive into the pictures:

This enclosure is being built to go into my isolation cabinet. Consequently, it needs to be somewhat compact. Also, I'm not going to bother with covering it with Tolex. It will just be painted satin black. But, I do want it to look decent enough that it wouldn't be completely unsightly if I was to put it on a stage. So, I am trying to do a little more than just cobble a box together.

Anyway...on to the pictures!

This is what I did yesterday...

Here are the main pieces, except for the speaker and grill cloth baffles. This is 3/4", furniture-grade, birch plywood. The overall dimensions will be 18" wide x 18" high x 10 1/2" deep. I will be installing a 12" Eminence Redcoat speaker into it.

Here is the completed enclosure. All joints are glued and screwed together.

Rear:

At this point, I am just going with an open-back, especially since this will just go into my iso-cab. But, I could easily cut a piece and fasten it in the middle to make a closed-back enclosure, if I wanted.

Here's just a shot with the speaker:

Here's a little of today's progress...

This shot shows the completed grill cloth baffle in the foreground and the speaker mounting bolts installed in the speaker baffle. Both pieces have been given a coat of primer.

In this pic, I've test fitted the grill cloth baffle. The grill cloth I'll be using is in the foreground. I purchased the grill cloth from Parts Express.

In this last shot, I've test fit the speaker into the speaker baffle.

That's all for now. Next, I'll be painting everything and attaching the grill cloth. I'm still waiting for the 1/4" jack to come so I can install that and wire the speaker.

The cabinet looks solid and beefy! What's the weight?

8 screws to secure the speaker! Why?

I'm assuming the grill cloth baffle will be tight against the speaker baffle. That should make for one very thick speaker baffle!

Why eight screws? The Eminence speaker frame has eight mounting holes!

Yes, the baffle for the grill cloth will be tight against the speaker baffle. I got the idea from that Peavey amplifier you see in the background, except both baffles in that amplifier are 3/4 plywood…making a full 1 1/2” thick!

Ipicked up a PD HD300 a while back for STUPID cheap --- mainly because I wanted to SEE what ll the LINE 6 HATRED was about...... turns out this particular unit is VERY enjoyable -- nice online interface-- TONS of tones ... and I spent less than dinner for 2 at Outback!!!

That looks great, Man!!!! You did a nice job!!!

I really wanted to build a 2x12, but the time constraints and workbench space was a big consideration, plus my ability was called into question too.

I ended up having a marine grade mahogany, finger joint 2x12 made for me instead. Only 26 pounds with (2) Celestion G12P80's.

I'm impressed, Man....Seriously.

Thank you very much for the kind words, Robert. But, I’m not done, yet.

I could still mess this up!
