I thought we should have a thread where we can talk about all aspects of recording and production.

Where members can give advice, tips and can share the knowledge.

Here is kinda norm for threads to go off topic and flooded off topic content.Lets try keep this thread focused on recording and anything related to recordings.

Generally the Mic’s room has been the accepted place for recording discussions. This is the library…see here:

I would be happy to move this over there.
I’m at work right now though …phone only.

you can go I like a move it move it and put where ever you think it fits the best.

OK, roger that. I assume we can have a community thread for all other recording type discussions. Lord knows I’m gonna have a bunch once I start getting serious about it. I’ve bought a bunch of gear but haven’t had the time to start stitching it all together. Heck, just yesterday I loaded Band in a Box software and spent an hour playing with it. That’s the most time in the last six months I’ve spent using the high end PC I bought for recording (64GB, 10th gen processor, 5 TB storage and two 43 inch monitors).

Huge rabbit hole here....
We could be in for some shiznit with this…yes.
Everyone has different systems…lots of variables…computer, OS, interfaces, microphones, preamps, DAW software, monitor systems…etc…
When people post questions about how to overcome a trouble spot, they should be prepared to provide necessary information about the recording chain in use. I know that @BFT Gibson is familiar with providing this type of information using photos and written words. He generally takes a picture of the microphones set up, and lists the equipment chain in use with the recorded file posted. This is an excellent practice to engage in when asking for help with a recording.

I reflect back to last year & diving into this. @Thatbastarddon really coached me through

My biggest tip, its all in the capture..the performance.

Probably have posted over 75 originals on here easily, you can go on members performances & see the mic's. Also when i went into real studio i showed that,

TRUST your ears !! Get it right at capture..

I think the hardest thing for me personally, is nailing down what mic works best and the mic placement itself and keeping it. Like mentioned earlier here: just a slight bump of the mic, shifts everything entirely. A wise man would probably take a tape measure and some tape and mark the exact spots once you find the sound your looking for, but then again, i aint a wise man by any stretch lmao

On the flipside, direct recording eliminates these problems, especially if you have mic placement and cab simulator features. Although, there is admittedly something lost in the charm of capturing YOUR true live sound with this setup. Still can get very close however and it can sound incredible.

Mic-ing the cab is an art itself. From what I know I can give you some advice. ( if you gonna listen and dont go tik tok clock mode). When you set up your amp, take bass little bit down as it can get woofy when you are tracking.

When you are trying to mic the cab, looper helps if you have one but if you dont keep playing and moving mice around ( its pain in the ass). Once you find the tone you are getting get electrical tape or something similar and make L shape to mark the sweet spot. That way you know its going to sound good next time you try and if will be a lot closer to what you have recorded previously.

When I set up mic, I usually put it between dust cum and speaker cone about two finger away from grill cloth.

closed mic gives you more devastating sound but I like the way I do it.

I like to record direct to an interface. With some guitars I use a DI box between the guitar and interface. I use a standard amp plugin and play a basic version of the guitar part I’m working on to the track. Then I play around with different plugins and settings in the plugins until I have the tone I’m looking for. Then I re-record the track so I can take advantage of the dynamics of the current plugins. I sometimes go through several iterations with different plugins and settings until I’m satisfied. Using this method I have an almost unlimited number of amps, cabs, mic’s, pedals, etc. to play with.
