The Best Tone I’ve Heard From An SG

So, I saw a video interview with Eric Johnson once where he was asked whether he has issues with the hum from his Strats. He responded that he usually doesn’t have much of a problem, but if he does encounter a room that is noisy, he’ll use a humbucker-based guitar.

I don’t know if those are the only situations where he uses his SG. He does purposely use his Les Paul for some songs.

I definitely like his Strat sounds, but I also like the variety from using his SG, as well.

All my guitars are shielded because my livelihood depends on being quiet in any situation. A humbucker without shielding won't be quiet. Perhaps quieter than a single coil, but they will still hum if unshielded.

I like Eric's ES-335 sounds also. Almost prefer him with a Gibson. Never been an Agnes Young fan. But I always thought this guy from Montreal got some of the best, quintessential SG sounds ever made.

Okay, you wanna hear something really, really embarrassing?

I‘ve never listened to Mahogany Rush before. I know…that’s both lame and sad, right?

Anyway, I really liked that. It has a smooth vibe, jazzy quality to it.

I gotta check out more of that.

I have, but they just never shook me up.

OK I am putting this out there, and I KNow there will be flack for it but it's how it is.
To me Joe Bonamassa is just a SRV wanna be. When I hear him play I hear SRV riffs stacked on top of one another.
There is said it and that's that.

I don't disagree. Personally I hear much more British guys being ripped off in his playing than I do SRV, but there is some of it there for sure. But then again, when I listen to SRV I don't hear anything particularly unique either - he tended to wear his influences on his sleeve as much as anyone.

I love that show. As I've said before, I prefer Joe in Rock bands to the blues schtick, but that is one hell of a show.

And, I am in complete agreement about his tone there - that was when he was using a bunch of Marshalls and Friedmans. IMHO, when he did that stint with nothing but the tweeds he sounded like poo, and more recently with the Dumbles and Twins I think he sounds pretty awful. Man needs to just stick with the Marshalls.

I like his playing (JB) and his demeanor. I got nothing bad to say about him...

Same here man. I never understood a few years back when it became fashionable to hate on him in guitar forums. The guy is living the freaking dream for a guitar player and he has both the chops and voice to deserve it, even before you get to the fact that he is very cool and gracious, and is such a deep nerd about music and gear. He used to post at MLP and you could have really cool insightful conversations with him, but no, the weenies drove him away. I'd like to hear the last album those jerkoffs released, or see how many tickets they'd sell to an arena show; then I will give them the right to criticize Joe B.

Like his music or don't, but don't try to take shots at him for being successful doing the thing I think everyone on these forums wishes they were doing (making any music you want the way you want, selling out shows all over the World, collecting the most desirable gear there is and actually using it).

In defense of Angus Young

He might not be the flashiest, might not be the most technical, but dammit to hell if he doesnt make 4 chords sound like the most kickass rumble. He embodies the perpetual kid at heart concept with his entire existence and despite his age: he still gives NOTHING less than 120% every single night. I only hope i will have 1/5 of his energy when im his age. And I always get a kick out of people short changing him on his skills, but have still yet to see any critic do it better than he can.

Whether you like him or not ( same goes with the band AC/DC themselves) you cant deny his ( or their) impact on rock and his inspiration to guitarists everywhere ( He is one of the 3 people who inspired me to pick up a guitar in the first place, in fact).
