So, this looks like it could be a fun little project.

What is the consensus among the amp gurus here?

Wow! The complete kit, with estimated shipping(no tax yet), totals $935.50 for me…
Thats awfully close to one of the new 65 blackface princeton models…something like $265 less.
But the kit ends up being a hand wired, eyelet board, build….hmmmmm….cool.

Are there less expensive kits? To be honest, I probably won't do this for quite some time, but I'm just getting the fact-finding started.

I haven’t shopped around in a while. You may find kits with better, or worse, component selections. You may become interested in other amp kit models as you research. Perhaps you may decide that you only want to build a head only kit…that would save a few bucks.
I encourage you to keep up the research…these kits look cool, but there are others out there.

Like these guys at Trinity amps- Kits

Or these- Allen Amplification - Quality Tube Guitar Amps, Kit, Parts, and Repairs

It's almost worthwhile just to buy the Fender amp instead....
many of these kits don't include all the parts, so you wind up spending more to finish it with tubes, a decent speaker, good filter caps etc..the parts they give you are not exactly upscale.
And the kit is a 10" speaker, the new Fender has a 12".

You gain building experience but you don't save much money, and it's not worth much if you want to sell it.
I decided to buy the finished amp and modify it instead.

For one thing I don't like the cheap speakers at all, and it's going to cost some cash to get a good one.

Also I'd like to get something made in USA (don't know if it will be...).

Maybe, maybe not. Looking at the Mojo kit, you get a lot for the cost. Diagram layout and building instructions look well detailed. Looks like they keep the small parts very organized in their storage boxes. Quality of parts looks and reads decent.

I'm a big fan of Allen Amps when it comes to Blackface style amp kits with modern extra features. But these premium kits will cost a premium more... almost $400 more for the Sweet Spot 1 x 10 combo.

Good luck, Smitty... We're counting on you... :fingersx:

Well, don’t count on me too much!

Being that this is just guitar gear and not a bona-fide life issue, my disclaimer applies: “I reserve the right to fickle and change my mind at any time!”

But, the point isn’t really to get an amp; I’m sure the Rivera will cover my genuine amplification needs admirably. The goal is to have some fun building an amp but not blow money needlessly doing it. Of course, I don’t want to just build a paperweight! I want something that is useful when it’s all over.

Building just a head is a good idea…I’ll have to look for something! Thanks for the thought, @Thatbastarddon !

Ha ha... But you have opened Pandora's Box by sharing your thoughts on amp kits. And I, aka Mr Pandora, believe it's my prime responsibility to inject as much GAS as possible to see you through this... . DO IT!!!!!

Yes, yes, yes.... You are feeling the force now! DO IT!!!!!

I actually built the head version of the Allen Sweet Spot. I also have under my belt, the Allen Chihuahua 1x10 combo kit. The Chihuahua is "loosely based" on a Blackface Champ. 6 watts with a 6V6, or 10 watts with a 6L6. And as usual per Allen Amps, "loosely based" means thoughtful and tasteful added features:
DO IT!!!!!
