27mph in a 25mph zone: the most confusing ticket ever

So on my way home today from work, i got pulled over for doing 27mph in a 25mph zone a couple towns over. Legally, this was indeed speeding by the strictest definition, admittedly. But it was also incredibly confusing to be honest.

The cop was nice i suppose and i returned the pleasantry in kind, but he wrote the speeding ticket none the less. He told me i was between 5-6 mph over but would knock it to 2mph because where i got pulled over was a bit of a speed trap: no warning sign of a speed decrease from 40mph to an immediate 25mph quick change and the sign is in a downhill left-turn just past a train crossing. Its possible i suppose, that i was close to 30mph admittedly from that aspect, but probably more realistically closer to the 27mph as he wrote on the ticket.

Speed limits are limits, i already know that but 2mph? Really, that's splitting some hairs at best. Vehicles with analog speedometers can very easily be out of calibration by that little and most mechanics wouldnt even waste time adjusting such a small difference. But i guess tomorrow ill find out what the damage is. Gonna go two ways: either they dismiss is and say be careful or being a one horse town? Probably slap me with $160 as its the number they love around here lol

I get your frustration. I am the most speed-limit abiding person I know, and I think that’s ridiculous.

I hear ya about the mechanical speedometers. I got a ticket once back in the ‘90s in a car that had had the tranny replaced before I got the car, and the speedo gear ratio was off.

I really dont try to speed at all. I will go to the limit but not over it, even when transferring downhill where your speed instantly picks up due to vehicle weight ( here in WV, thats everywhere in the state. Dont call it the Mountain State for nothing lol). If its 70mph? Im usually at 68-69 and will brake if in cruise control on a downhill because that bumps you easily to 73-75 on these 9% grades that are extremely common here.

But it is what it is. Im really not even angry, except maybe at the prospect of actually being charged with a ticket and not a dismissal. I was more kinda confused at even getting pulled over at that small of a difference lol

thats insane --- I passed a state trooper today -- 80 in a 70 ..........no issues........ of course the 75 or so OTHER cars around me were ALSO doing 80 -- or more (I was in the middle lane AND BEING PASSED) -- so -- frankly -- whats he gonna do...................... I think he was NAPPING in the median or playing video games on his phone ....

NORM!!
How is things? Still hot? Hope things are good!

Hi Jethro! We have had some sweltering weather this year with high Humidexes, four days ago they had a tornado rip through Barrie, Ontario, F2 did some catastrophic damage 11 people injured , thankfully no deaths. Ripped apart a wide swath of homes. Barrie is about a 4 hour drive north of us. Also watching the news saw a quick blurp that Parry Sound had one go through this afternoon, haven't heard all the details yet. We have been lucky so far, its been missing us. The weather systems are getting much worse , things are changing these days more rapidly.

Probably having issues with his new radar gun.....

Boo says he's running the gas pedal tomorrow. He promises to keep it under 100 mph. The speedometer in my little Celica stopped working last year when the VSS crapped out. I found a free phone app that uses GPS to calculate speed and distance. It is much more accurate than any car speedo. Heck, you are off by 2 mph if your tires have any wear. The govt. only requires accuracy to within 5 percent on new cars. Sounds like you got yourself a regular Roscoe P. Coltrane there. I would definitely challenge the ticket.
