IT is an ongoing mental conundrum ---

I want to make the switch to try it -- I can always switch back.
I can even remove neck and use bridge P90....only.... maybe even get a REALLY HOT ONE -- and as you say dummy coil
I could put the minihum in the beck position.......... hhmmm.......

so many options --- so very little desire to solder ---- and thats the rub right there really
or I could flip that and do this

Yep, it'd still have its cover, even pole screws and the coil inside. Just no magnets to pull on the strings.

I simply prefer P90 tone to mini hums myself. I did say "that's just me."

If the guitar were often going to be exposed to bad power and noisy dimmers, it could be a reasonable compromise even for me.
But I'd consider it a compromise.

Still think using the neck P90 as a dummy coil might be a viable concept.
Anyway, there are decent sounding noise-cancelling P90 types (though trying the P100 has soured many on the whole idea).
Lindy Fralin makes a good one. Even the relatively cheap Kent Armstrongs are quite decent.

For me no mini hum has ever quite measured up to a great P90.
That's my personal taste.
Not saying I'd replace them if I had a vintage Deluxe.
Just that I've never really managed to love them.

I'm constantly being paid to get rid of them...personally, I just won't tolerate buzz, hum or sensitivity to lighting, because my work revolves around recording, but for some it's probably not a deal breaker.

You know that Gibson mini hums and actual Firebird pickups are not the same right?

Yeah. But, it could be argued that the Firebird minis ARE actual Gibson mini-humbuckers! What we generally think of as Gibson mini-humbuckers (the smaller PAF-ish design) are actually an Epiphone invention. Gibson acquired the rights and design when they bought Epiphone.

Incidentally, I really like the Gibson minis (not referring to the Firebird pickups). I have them on my ‘74 SG.

C'mon, do it. Cut the wires and use some crimp on push connectors. You don't need to solder. Really, it will be okay.

I broke out the soldering iron today --
and -- tackled..................................... the output jack on the Peavey Predator..... and well after that ---- I couldnt take any more I had to unplug the iron the pups will need to wait for another day in the Firebird -- 1 soldering chore a month is all I can handle

Fixed?

Needs more heat shield. Plus, you would think at that size it would have an automatic solder dispenser built into the tip.
