Random Thoughts: Frets:

Softest fret material ever - My 2016 Gibson Les Paul Studio and 50's Tribute. I have no idea what they are using, but I wore the frets out in 3 months and had to level and crown.

Second softest fret material - My 2019 Schecter Hellraiser C1FR. harder than the Gibson, but wore them out in about 7 months

Best fret material - Jescar Gold Evo Fretwire. I am using the .104" x .047" on my yellow Stratocaster. These are wide, like Gibson jumbo wire, but a little taller. Similar to Dunlop's #6150 and SM #0149.

Absolutely bulletproof. Cannot even wear a groove in them. No sparkly dust building up next to my frets...

Zoom in and look at the brass "fairy dust" piled up alongside the frets on my Schecter Hellraiser C1FR:

Gibson frets after about 3 months:

About 4 months of daily playing on the YelloStrat:

Playing hard enough to break strings at the midpoint. I was breaking at least one string during rehearsal.

20210320_135612.jpg

The only way I could get through a 6 hour performance (two (3) hour sets, 50 minutes on, 10 minutes off, 1 hour break between 3 hour sets) was to put new strings on it the morning of a show and just railroad them without stretching them.

I found that forcefully stretching the strings (by holding them down and pulling up on them) stresses the string and under intense magnification, you can see an "hourglass" profile where the string was fretted and stretched.

I've marked the strings and they always, always, always break in this area.

What I started doing was just playing the guitar for 30-45 minutes and then returning and going on stage with zero forcefull stretching.

This allowed me to get through a set without a break, even though I wore the nail and hide off my index finger in the process...

So, one big vote for the Jescar frets and one big vote against forcefull string stretching...image_10341.jpg

What “Gibson” factory frets were those? Note:fret over binding….not done on many models, or for many years…translation-no nibs?

Oh….I see now….not a “Gibson”….a “Faux Paul”…. So, it’s actually the frets on a counterfeit that wear out in 3 months…not an “actual Gibson”? Gotcha. Perhaps that should be made clear. “Chibson frets wear out the quickest”.

Although, I’d argue that the original frets on my 83/84 Fender Stratocaster were fairly soft, and easy to play through.

My error in uploading the images. In all honesty, the Chibby frets are tougher.

There's an entire thread devoted to the worn frets on the 2016 Gibson Les Paul 50's Tribute.

I'll dig the before images out later, but here's my 50's Tribute when I got done with it...

Gibson just isn't made by the hands of
God as some would suggest.

Here ya go, @Thatbastarddon...

Here's the correct image of the worn out frets on my 50's Tribute...

I get a kick out of how defensive you get over Gibson. Man, I won't defend any brand other than the ones I built myself.

You could have made a Civil response and I would have changed the image.

Dude, it's just a forum... :-)

I still get a good laugh when think that I traded a 2016 Gibson SG for that Chibby...

And it earned me enough in one month to buy buy a real Gibson...

Top that...

:)

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!
In no way did I suggest anything, other than the fact that someone used several pictures of a Chibson Faux Paul to “illustrate” a negative opinion of “Gibson” QC…… :rolf: :rolf::rolf:You’re entitled to your “opinion” sir!
I’m just observing your “QC”……

Well... 18% nickle is not a very durable material. (German Silver)
Stainless steel would be the longest lasting probably.
The Jesco Gold EVO is the ones that lasted I'm thinking. That is nickle free alloy.
But their not saying what the EVO alloy is made from....
you should probably go for Jesco EVO wire from now on.

I like pyramid frets.

According to Jescar, the elemental composition is: CuSn15Fe1Ti0.1

I made a mistake uploading an image. Some of us are mere mortals...but I do thank you for pointing out the error.

My Schecter needs Evo's. Those frets are soft as butter.

Easy there big guy….as I said….I wasn’t going for anything other than accuracy. It struck me funny that something didn’t look right with what was written….that’s all.
”Gibson frets after 3 months” followed by picture of something, clearly, “not Gibson”.
I saw it as fairly humorous….

My wife is right...I have too many guitars!!!

I can say that FAUX PAUL --is better than any GIBSON les paul (and just short of my 1970 Gibson LP Recording guitar) Ive played....period -- wish I had kept the damn thing...but damn glad its got a happy home and is out in the world making music as it should be ;)

Please note that in no way did I “slag” the quality of that guitar.
I do not agree with the ethics of its existence. Just about any other name on the headstock would negate that opinion for me. As is, it is a counterfeit….a criminally and deceptively labeled product.
I’ve got this:
70C8767C-6717-4A28-AD02-D73B4312CAD6.jpeg
It says “Gladiator” on the headstock….plays better than most of my guitars…whatever brand. It doesn’t pretend to be anything other than a copy/tribute. It tells me no lies.

edit: oh yeah, and I’ve made a few bucks with it over the time I’ve had it. Never really kept track after it paid for itself.

I don't know how they did it, but someone got the bridge posts and fret placement exactly right on that guitar...
