Switching from GarageBand to ??????

All this talk of recording, I finally decided to poop or get off the pot. Just downloaded Reaper and the drivers for my Akai EIE Pro. Still need a few things, and some time. But at least now, I can mess around with it again.

I wanted to try out one of those interfaces...they look pretty cool!

I have a nice old '70s Sound Design 16 track mixing board with four monitor sends, and individual monitor switching on each channel. I eventually want to use this set up with that board. I can mix all the drums to one channel, bass to another, guitar, and then scratch vocals. I can put everything thorough the board first, or just drums and vocals. Then do D.I. with the bass and a single mic on the guitar amp. It seems that I have a bunch of options with that set up. Tom needs to finish construction on his house (and we need to play more often) before I can set up the Sound Design board. In the meantime, my 16 track Mackie works pretty good, but no multiple monitor sends.

Even though it needs a good cleaning, that Sound Design board sounds really nice. Probably because it's analog.

The pre’s are probably pretty sweet on that board...better than anything else out there in the last 20 years... you can, likely, feed the AKAI a bunch of different ways from a board like that...wether it’s direct from an aux out, or the mains, or looks like you’ve got 4 subgroups....if you ever have any routing questions, please feel free....I love that old analog stuff, and recording in general..

It's also got the inserts for each channel if I had a patch bay for rack effects.

Yep....I’ve already refreshed my memory of that unit...I really was thinking of purchasing one when they first came out....but live band/drum kit... I’m used to recording many drum tracks ....unless live recording, maybe.

It's pretty funny. I bought this for $150.00 with an Anvil flight case at Daddy's Junky Music around '96. The digital craze was in full bloom, and I got a great sounding board for short money.

Or....

YES! That's it.

YES! That's it.
Cool board...pretty straightforward...should pair well with your AKAI interface...just assign channels to the appropriate busses, and go. If single tracking...like solo drums...send kick to bus1, snare to bus 2, overheads and/or toms to bus 3 and 4....lots of good stuff on tap. Apparently, the patchbay differs from unit to unit...some have inserts...not sure about that routing. Still....wicked pissah!

If you ever want any help/input/whatever....PM me...I’m not that far off, and like getting hands on time with classic gear...

plus...if you have the inserts, I have a box that you might find interesting...

Thanks. More incentive to get my act together. Where we play (Tom's place) is halfway between us, so less driving time for you. You'd have fun.

Since Alex is off for a new knee next week, then eventually a hip, we're starting to play with Tom's old drummer/neighbor when they were in a band called Suck Button. It will be a bit more fun to record, as there will be no real direction. Unlike my original stuff usually is well defined and specific. But then, we may develop some of that too.

I just need to wait for him to finish some stuff so we can reconfigure the part of his cellar where we play, and build a table for the board and laptop.

Sounds like some fun to be had! Just give me a heads up for prep.
