I've done covers of 'Crossfire' before, but always struggled to nail Stevie's solos note for note. It has been suggested that I just throw down the solos in my natural, uneducated Neanderthal style, so we got together in a garage (tractor shed) and recorded this in a single take. This was recorded while other employees/family were walking in and out and sharp ears will hear a leaf blower running in the background near the end of the second solo. Recorded and presented as-is, with all mistakes...

Enjoy...or at least be nauseated....

This isn't a great recording, but it's average (I think) for a bar band. It's still tough for me to play and sing, even a blues number with vocals coming in between the guitar lines.

Yellow Strat (bridge position DiMarzio Neanderthal 16.5k 44AWG AlNico 9 Humbucker) direct into Blackstar ID-Core 100 with no FX other than Reverb

Maybe an above average bar band? Most bar bands would try to copy note for note. Most bar bands wouldn’t get it right. I much prefer when a band comes up with their own version. You rocked it!

On some of the songs from our setlist, most notably Hotel California and Hit Me With Your Best Shot, I play the solos note for note

On 'Crossfire,' I try to hit a few of Stevie's signature licks, to keep it familiar, but aside from that, it's just ad-lib.

Said it before. If you’re a “tribute” band, ya gotta play note for note. That’s what people are paying to see/hear.

If you’re a cover band…. Make it your own. Obviously people have to know what you’re playing…..beyond that. Inject your personality.

Great stuff!! I really like when people play what they feel, use emotion, play some of the main licks of original otherwise just go for it!
Especially blues. It sorta is a play how you feel thjng rather than a note for note.
I like it.

I should have added to this. I have heard bands do covers where I did not know what the song was till I was able to distinguish some lyrics. Then it’d be like…. Wow!!! They really butchered that one.

Then you have Disturbed do “Sound Of Silence.” A song I really like. Disturbed put their stamp on it. Gave me chills listening to it.

Make it your own.

Ok,

I kept the drum, vocal, bass and piano tracks from the May 28th session and cleaned up some of the white noise on the tracks.

Then, this morning, I decided to re-record the lead guitar parts, but broke the high 'e' on YelloStrat in the process. Rather than change strings, I switched to my Les Paul #1 and completed the project.

This was recorded on my Marshall Origin 50H through my pedalboard. Reverb effect is via my Boss RV-6.

Still not a truly remarkable effort, but a little better, I believe than the previous version and you can hear the difference between guitars and amps in comparison.

Thoughts???
