Ode to the Squier Bullet ...

... we (or at least I) new thee oh so well.

It appears that gone are the days of the MF bargain Bullets that sold for $150 but were on sale about once a month $120 - recently the ticket's been upped to $180.

Now, some will call these junker bottom feeders, but not I, as long as they're the MII (Indonesian) versions. I've had at least a dozen, probably closer to double that, in both Strat and Tele flavors. I'd buy them on sale, and on arrival I wouldn't even bother tuning up and testing out, I'd totally dismantle everything screwed down, pulled all apart, and closely examined. Excellent necks and bodies, really good polyU or acrylic finishes, decent components, a good setup and there it is, perfect for a newbie.

But why stop there? The platform is quite good, so for a bit of modding and a few bucks, I'd turn them into workhorses for both amateur and pro. The quickee mod is to replace all electronics - pickups, switch, pots and jack. One pro customer, a columnist for Premier Guitar Mag, used a few of these for cable channel sound bytes for shows such as Duck Dynasty and Pawn Stars ... there were others, but I forget the names, I'm old, I have CRS at times. :)

Stealthing a Bullet became kinda fun - just buff off the headstock Squier logo, mod it with all new electronics and do a good setup, leave it out in the shop on a stand and get comments from customers. Customers would play it and offer good comments and then be quite surprised when I told them of the platform's origins. Most were sold off inside a week, right on the spot after playing. Good, or even great, doesn't need to require purchasing via taking out a loan or on installments.

So, what makes a "good guitar"?

Here's my prioritized list, see if you can identify ...

1. Playability - no matter how great the tone or how cool it looks, if it won't play well for you, it's useless.
2. Sound/Tone - for an electric guitar at gigging and recording levels, it's all about the player's brain and fingers and then the pickups and what they feed onboard and all the stuff offboard. At living room playing levels, there is no question that going into clean amplification will allow the amalgam of the guitar add to the tone, mostly heard via resonant wood.
3. Aesthetics - size, shape, color, bling, etc - totally subjective.
4. Money - does buying "pro guitar" really mean taking out a loan?

Are havin' fun, yet? ;)

After 66 years of owning and actually playing most all manner of guitars, I'm actually down to one, a Tele. Oh, and a dreadnought. And a nice short scale bass. Oh, and a neat mandolin. Oops, almost forgot, loving lap steels, too. I've seen the light, I no longer gig so one of each is all I need - being honest with one's self can be such a PITA. Oh look at the time - time for meds, yea! o_O;)

I put sound first, then playability.

I can make just about anything playable (barring major damage or defects), but if it doesn't sound good to me, I won't enjoy playing it. And I don't think the volume level matters. If it doesn't sound good, it doesn't sound good.

That's my point - if you can't make it play well for you, then it's a truly useless instrument.

Operative word = "can't".

If "can" is in yer wheelhouse for that particular guitar's playability issue, then Item #1 is a non-issue and lucky you that Item #2 rocks yer world so yer good to go! Unless the guitar is pink. No male guitarist should play pink or tutti-fruitti guitars. Word.

personally don't care what anyone want's to play. If it makes you happy, play it. But I have always hated the color pink.

My first store-bought, brandy new, never used, not a hand-me-down, 'lectric guitar was a Jaguar Beach Boys special custom ordered direct from Leo in the Summer of 1962 via Johnny's Music on 48th street "music row" NYC. My Dad thought I was nuts getting a short scale (24") guitar. He was right. To each their own, it's all good in the short and long run.

Looks exactly like the "guitar" Dad got me in '53 that had a good 3/8" string action. What was he thinking? What did I know about guitars? He figured that if I stuck with that abomination, I must be Really interested in guitars. I was, I kept at it, he took notice, and bought me a lovely Gretsch "00". Those were the dayze ....

Squiers can be excellent guitars. I have an older telecaster, well I own it. It seems to live at my step-daughter’s house. I don’t often play telecasters or stratocasters so I can’t see spending a lot of money. I watch the local buy and sell ads for cheap Squiers and check them out. Every once in a while I find a hidden treasure. I usually set it up so it plays well and give it away to young player. If it’s really nice I’ll hang on to it for a while.

speaking of bullets..........................bullet BASS
